Discover the Best Embroidery Classes in Houston

Hand embroidery is a type of fiber art that consists of using a needle and thread or yarn to sew designs onto fabric. Many types of textiles can be embroidered, some of the more common fabric items being clothing, pillows, blankets, napkins, towels, bags, and cloth that can be displayed like artwork.

Embroidery can be simple, such as monogramming a towel, or intricate, such as creating a detailed nature scene on a pillow. Basic embroidery stitches include the running stitch, backstitch, split stitch, stem stitch, satin stitch, and French knots, but there are over 300 different embroidery stitches that can be used to create unique, intricate designs.

Handmade embroidery has a long and ancient history – one of the oldest surviving embroidered pieces was found at the tomb of the famous Egyptian pharaoh, Tutankhamun. Today, embroidery can be done by computerized machines, but the art of hand embroidery lives on as a unique type of needlework that produces exquisite one-of-a-kind pieces.

Why You Should Learn Embroidery in Houston

Are you looking for a relaxing and productive way to fill your time? Learning embroidery will not only give you a fun hobby but the creative skills to create unique fiber artwork to display in your home or gift to friends and family. Many fiber artists have also found ways to profit from their embroidery projects by selling customized and one-of-a-kind items, as well as embroidery designs on websites like Etsy and Amazon Handmade.

Some people have turned to embroidery and needlework as a way to reduce stress and as an effective form of meditation. Instead of scrolling endlessly through social media, try embroidery as a more productive and calming way to spend your free time.

Learning embroidery will also plug you into a larger community of embroiderers and fiber artists. You may be able to find local embroidery clubs through Facebook or your local library in which embroiderers gather to share tips and projects they are working on. Established in New York in 1958, The Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA) is a national organization with the mission to foster the art of needlework by promoting the exchange of ideas and high standards of quality in embroidery. With over 240 chapters across the US and Canada, the EGA provides its members access to local meetings, workshops, and exhibitions, as well as embroidery projects and other educational resources.

The Houston Embroiderers' Guild (HEG), a local chapter of the EGA, is open to anyone who loves the art of needlework, beginners and professionals alike. Houston-area residents interested in embroidery can join the HEG to participate in their monthly programs, workshops, stitch-ins, and correspondence courses.

Virtual Embroidery Classes

If creating art from the comfort of your own is appealing to you, consider taking an online embroidery class. Embroidery classes that are conducted live online allow you to ask questions and receive feedback in real-time – just as you would in an in-person class – but can be taken from anywhere with an internet connection. Instead of having to commute to class, you can easily set up your own workspace at home to embroider with others virtually. While in-person classes may provide you with some sewing and embroidery supplies, for virtual classes you generally will have to supply your own materials.

The Evanston Art Center's Extreme Embroidery Workshop will teach you all about the exciting possibilities of hand stitching. Individuals of all skill levels ages 18 and older will learn about the various ways modern embroidery has been turned into a unique art form by multimedia artists and crafters. Those interested in floral embroidery can attend the New York Botanical Garden's Floral Folk Embroidery class for ages 18 and older. Artist Sarah Pedlow teaches participants how to use centuries-old Eastern European surface embroidery techniques to stitch a Polish design pattern. With inspiration from 17th and 18th-century textiles, beginner and intermediate embroiderers will stitch beautiful floral designs onto cotton or linen fabric. For a full list of supplies to purchase, see the course description.
