Description

Learn Suminagashi (墨流し), Japanese marbling meaning "floating ink." Dating back more than 800 years, it was practiced in the Heian period (794–1185).

Drop ink on water and guide it with breath, brushes, or air. Transfer the patterns to washi paper or fabric, such as handkerchiefs.

Each print is unique, reflecting the Japanese appreciation of impermanence. All skill levels are welcome, including children aged 12 and above.

Explore traditional art through a meditative creative practice.

Event Itinerary:

  • 10 min: The history of suminagashi and a demonstration of floating ink on water.
  • 35 min: Guests make a series of prints on washi paper, guiding the ink with breath and brush.
  • 10 min: Transferring a design onto a fabric item such as a handkerchief.
  • 5 min: Drying and take-home.

Note: This class is available only at our partner's studio because floating ink can stain surfaces.
