Description

Precisely cut pieces hold by fit alone, as seen in shoji screens and interiors.

In this hands-on class you will:

  1. Discover what kumiko is — its history and how it works.
  2. Practice all three foundation patterns: asa-no-ha (hemp leaf), rindō (gentian), and goma (sesame) — building each one in the same practice frame, then taking it apart to try the next.
  3. Use what you have learned to design your own arrangement inside the ichirin-zashi flower vase.

Kits are handmade by Ōminato Bunkichi Shoten in Kamo, Niigata, a woodcraft atelier dating to the Meiji era. Beginners learn the assembly order, fit, and handling with instructor guidance.

Beginner-friendly. The practice frame stays in the studio, so everything you learn goes into the one piece you take home: the ichirin-zashi flower vase you designed yourself.

Event Itinerary:

  • 10 min: What kumiko is, its history, and why the lattice holds together without nails or glue.
  • 40 min: Guests practice all three foundation patterns, asa-no-ha, rindo and goma, building each in the same practice frame and taking it apart to try the next.
  • 30 min: Guests keep the pattern they like best and use what they have learned to design their own arrangement inside an ichirin-zashi flower vase.
  • 10 min: Finishing and photos.

Note: Every guest takes home two pieces, the foundation pattern they kept and the vase they designed. All kits are handmade by Ominato Bunkichi Shoten, a kumiko atelier in Kamo, Niigata, working in wood since the Meiji era.

Provider note for At-client-location: When we travel to a client site, we ask for access to the room 60 minutes before the start time so the instructor can set up.
