Hermann Park presents extraordinary photographic opportunities throughout the grounds, with particularly stunning vistas at sunset. The class begins at the Sam Houston Statue before proceeding to Miller Hill, the park's highest elevation, where you will capture and photograph the expansive landscape as light changes during the golden hour. Your Digital Photo Academy instructor will share professional techniques for managing natural light and composing compelling images; these principles apply to all future photography. The outing includes photography at McGovern Lake, featuring a dramatic central fountain that creates beautiful reflections of the sky, plus wildlife, including swans that serve as cooperative subjects. Nearby McGovern Gardens offers diverse botanical subjects suitable for flower and plant photography.
At the opposite end of the Sam Houston Statue stands an Egyptian Obelisk, with its mirror image reflected in an adjacent reflecting pool. Capturing reflections requires specific compositional techniques, which your Digital Photo Academy instructor will demonstrate and guide you through in a hands-on manner. Beyond reflection photography, your instructor will teach several additional accessible composition methods applicable to future shoots.
The class convenes at the Sam Houston Statue. Parking facilities are available nearby, including a complimentary lot; however, if the free lot reaches capacity, paid parking alternatives are available in the area.
Each Composition in the Field class includes an instructional segment with a Digital Photo Academy instructor, followed by a guided exploration through photogenic locations. Digital Photo Academy offers these field workshops across twenty-plus cities, covering diverse photographic subjects including street scenes, interior spaces, farmers' markets, wildlife habitats, landscapes, and numerous other themes. The course draws on a portfolio of imagery taken by students and instructors across multiple venues and cities throughout the United States and Canada.
This three-hour field session combines learning and enjoyment. You will develop strategic photography skills, capture more compelling images, and establish foundational knowledge to enhance your photography going forward, whether you are traveling, attending special events, or photographing everyday moments.
Class cancellation policy: If adverse weather or unforseen circumstances require class cancellation, Digital Photo Academy will reschedule your session at no additional cost.
