Houston offers an abundance of photography subjects that many visitors initially overlook. From charming Victorian homes and graceful turn-of-the-century architecture to contemporary parks and gleaming modern skyscrapers, the city provides diverse visual landscapes. You'll find inviting spaces featuring elegant fountains, historic monuments, majestic oak trees, and vibrant gardens throughout the area. The winding river that flows through the city creates opportunities for both abstract photographic studies and timeless scenic compositions. Jim Caldwell brings extensive knowledge of Houston's photographic potential and has dedicated his career to celebrating the beauty and diversity of the Bayou City. Join him for any or all of his three-hour outdoor photography sessions scheduled throughout multiple Saturdays and Sundays each year.
Tranquility Park, built as a tribute to NASA's Apollo Space program, sits nestled within the valley formed by Houston's impressive skyscrapers. This location provides numerous photographic possibilities thanks to the varied patterns created by building windows, the differing shapes of structures, and the range of architectural heights. The Wortham Fountain, with its distinctive water flow cascading over and down through cylindrical forms, offers excellent opportunities for practicing and refining shutter speed techniques. Multiple platforms provide convenient access to varied vantage points; you can position yourself below, above, or beside the fountain for diverse compositional perspectives.
What to Bring:
Every Composition in the Field session begins with an instructional presentation led by one of our seasoned photographers. Following this orientation, you and your fellow participants explore one of many photogenic destinations (from the 20+ cities served by the DPA). Available subject matter includes street scenes, stunning interiors, farmers' markets, wildlife settings, natural landscapes, and countless other possibilities, all represented in our extensive photo collection. Our curated collection features a combination of images created by both students and instructors across numerous venues spanning cities throughout the United States and Canada.
Throughout the three-hour class, you will enjoy yourself while learning strategic approaches to composition and exposure. You'll capture more compelling images compared to typical snapshots, and you'll develop the foundational skills needed to enhance your photographic work, whether you're photographing during travel, attending celebrations, or recording everyday life.
Please note: if a class must be cancelled due to weather or other factors outside our control, we will work with you to schedule a replacement date. If you need to cancel and request a new class date, please contact us. A $25 transfer fee will apply if notice is not provided at least three days before your scheduled class.
