LA: Wheel Throwing

Description

In this class, students will learn the basics of wheel throwing including centering, pulling the walls, and moral support to make a functional piece. No experience is required. All materials and equipment are included in this class. 

After class, your creations are to dry for a few days followed by being placed in the kiln for the first of two firings. Once the clay is dry enough it is placed in the kiln for 48 hours, unloaded, glazed, and reloaded into the kiln where it will fully vitrify at 2167°Farenheit. Once the kiln cools your piece is unloaded, packaged, and ready for pick up. If you do decide to make a functional piece please note that all of our glazes and clay bodies are food safe. Most students tend to make their own cup, bowl, or plate.

Event Itinerary:

• The class begins with a short 15-minute demonstration by an instructor on the technical aspects of clay and how to create the structure and form students aim to make.
• Followed by everyone creating their own individual piece. Depending on the scale of the piece students tend to leave with 1-3 creations. If they choose to focus on a larger form, then 1 piece. Creating time usually lasts for about an hour and a half. 
• The last 10 minutes of the session account for clean-up time. Once clean-up time is done each student gets to choose a glaze of their choice. 
• There are over 20 glaze options to choose from ranging from matte to glossy, blue, red, yellow, brown, black, and more.
