Filigree comes from the Latin roots "filum" (thread) and "granum" (seed), and the craft lives up to both. Filigree jewelry making is the art of curling, twisting, and plaiting fine threads of precious metal into intricate designs that are then joined by soldering into a delicate, lace-like tracery. The resulting pieces can be set in open-work patterns, placed within a metal framework, or soldered directly to a base.
Filigree has ancient origins and traveled through cultures across millennia, with each tradition developing its own distinctive motifs and techniques. Because filigree cannot be replicated by machine, every piece is genuinely one of a kind. This class also introduces you to heat control with a torch, a fundamental metalworking skill.
All materials are supplied. Please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes, and tie back long hair. Please note that the studio entrance involves one short, steep flight of stairs.
What You'll Learn:
The instructor will demonstrate filigree wire preparation ahead of time so the class can focus on the hands-on work of building a finished piece of jewelry.
Event Itinerary:
Session 1: Build a sterling silver wire frame using cutting, forming, and soldering techniques. You will clean up and pre-polish. A pendant is the recommended starting project, though a brooch or earrings are also possible based on your preference.
Session 2: Fill your frame with twisted filigree wires in varying thicknesses to create the intricate internal design. This step requires a more delicate touch with the torch as the finer wires heat quickly. You will finish with a final clean and polish to complete your piece.
