As a photographer, this turn-of-the-19th-century community will be a grand slam for photo ops of vintage architecture including New England style clapboard homes, a historic church from the 1850’s and other old-world structures. There will be vistas of Puget Sound framed by white picket fences stretching beyond to bluffs off in the distance. Remnants of the mill industry provide still life machinery photos, nautical-themed chains and anchors and an array of authentic antiquities and tools from 175 years ago in the museum.
Use the winding lanes and trails for landscape shots within a leading line composition technique or try panning a bicyclists riding by. Your instructor will demonstrate and supervise a myriad of composition strategies from Rule of Thirds, Negative Space, Layering and more. Or perhaps focus on environmental portraits of shop keepers and their eclectic antiques and other fare.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a talk with one of our experienced instructors, and then you and your fellow students take a stroll through one of a variety of photogenic locales (in any of the 20+ cities the DPA encapsulates). There is street photography, magnificent interiors, farmers markets, zoos, landscapes, and more, photos of which are included within. These photos are a mix of student and instructor images in many different venues and cities across the United States and Canada.
You will have fun in the three hour session, learn to shoot strategically, get more interesting photos of the event, and walk away with a foundation to improve your photographs in the future, whether you’re traveling, or at a birthday party and everywhere in between.
