With a surprisingly large number of Fortune 500 companies and a vibrant arts and tech community, the Twin Cities offer fertile ground for UX designers. Learning UX design in Minneapolis means you’ll be prepared to contribute to user experiences in retail, healthcare, finance, and more – all in a region known for its high quality of life and strong job market.

UX Design Salaries in Minneapolis

UX designers in Minneapolis enjoy competitive salaries, often on par with larger coastal markets once cost of living is considered. The average base salary for a UX Designer in the Twin Cities is around $80,000–$85,000 per year, with total compensation (including bonuses) often reaching into the low six figures. Local salary surveys indicate an average around $81,000 for UX designers in Minneapolis. Senior UX roles and specialized positions (like UX architects or managers) can command $100,000 or more. The region’s strong salaries are buoyed by the presence of many large corporations and a low unemployment rate (~4.2% as of 2023). Additionally, the Twin Cities’ embrace of remote work means you could live in Minneapolis while working for a company elsewhere, potentially increasing your earning power. Overall, by learning UX in Minneapolis, you’re stepping into a job market that values your skills and will compensate you well for them.

Industries in Minneapolis–St. Paul That Employ UX Designers

The Minneapolis–St. Paul metro area has a diverse economy, and many of its key industries are actively hiring UX talent:

Retail & Ecommerce: Minneapolis is home to retail giants like Target (HQ in downtown Minneapolis) and Best Buy (HQ in nearby Richfield). These companies have massive digital teams working on Target’s shopping app, Best Buy’s ecommerce site, and in-store digital experiences. UX designers here influence how millions shop online and engage with brands. Additionally, smaller ecommerce startups and retail tech firms in the Twin Cities further expand opportunities in this sector.
Healthcare & Medtech: Minnesota is known for its healthcare and medical device industry – led by companies like UnitedHealth Group (the largest health insurer, based in Minnetonka) and Medtronic (medical devices, with major operations in Fridley). These organizations employ UX and product designers to create user-friendly patient portals, health tracking apps, and interfaces for medical equipment. With healthcare services being one of the fastest-growing industries in the state, UX designers with an interest in health tech will find Minneapolis full of possibilities.
Financial Services: The Twin Cities have a strong finance sector, including U.S. Bank (HQ in Minneapolis) and Ameriprise Financial (HQ in Minneapolis). These firms, along with others like Wells Fargo (which maintains a large campus in the area), need UX designers for banking apps, investment management platforms, and internal financial software. Designing secure, easy-to-use interfaces for customers managing their money is a critical task, making finance a significant UX-employing industry here.
Manufacturing & High-Tech Products: Minnesota has a legacy of manufacturing excellence with companies like 3M (Maplewood) and General Mills (Golden Valley) headquartered locally. While not software companies per se, these conglomerates invest in UX for their B2B software, customer-facing websites, and emerging tech initiatives (3M, for example, employs UX professionals for its software solutions and lab interfaces). Moreover, hi-tech manufacturers like Honeywell (which has roots in Minneapolis) contribute to demand for UX in industrial and IoT product design.
Education & Nonprofits: The Twin Cities are a regional education hub (University of Minnesota and others) and home to large nonprofit and arts organizations (like Thomson Reuters in Eagan for information services, or the many museums and cultural institutions). These organizations increasingly hire UX designers to improve educational software, library systems, and digital experiences for arts patrons. It’s a smaller slice of the job market, but meaningful for those interested in mission-driven design work.

Notably, Minneapolis–St. Paul boasts 14 Fortune 500 company headquarters– a testament to how many large employers are in the area. This breadth of industries means as a UX Designer in Minneapolis, you can apply your skills to consumer apps, enterprise tools, public services, and everything in between.

In-Demand UX Roles in Minneapolis

Given the strong corporate presence, many UX opportunities in Minneapolis–St. Paul center on roles that can thrive in large organizational settings or adapt to various product types. In-demand UX roles include:

Product UX Designers: Companies like Target and U.S. Bank seek well-rounded product designers who can shepherd a feature from concept through usability testing to final UI design. The ability to work cross-functionally and present to stakeholders is highly valued in these roles, as teams are often matrixed across big organizations.
UX Researchers: With healthcare and finance in the mix, there’s an emphasis on validating designs with real users. UX research roles are growing, where one might conduct field studies at a clinic for a health app or run focus groups for a financial planning tool. The Twin Cities’ user research community is tight-knit, and companies appreciate researchers who can gather insights from the Midwest’s diverse user base.
Interaction/UI Designers: Many Twin Cities firms maintain dedicated roles for interaction design – focusing on the flow and behavior of digital interfaces – and visual design, focusing on the final look. Best Buy, for instance, might have interaction designers map out the checkout process on their site, while a UI Designer ensures the interface aligns with brand guidelines and is visually clear.
Service Designers: Minneapolis has a strong tradition of design thinking (helped by local design agencies and Fortune 500 innovation labs). Service designers, who take a holistic view of user experience across channels and touchpoints, are in-demand especially at companies tackling omnichannel experiences – such as retail (online and in-store integration) or healthcare (clinic and online care coordination).
Content Designers/Strategists: Several large companies in the area have begun to invest in UX content strategy. For example, a content Designer at a healthcare company might ensure that the language in a patient app is empathetic and easy to understand, or a content strategist at an ecommerce firm might work on product naming and navigational copy. This reflects a maturing UX practice in the region that goes beyond visuals to consider what is communicated.
UX Engineers/Front-End Prototypers: Some roles blur the line between design and development. Firms like Target have UX engineering roles where individuals code interactive prototypes or contribute to design systems in code. These roles are ideal for those with a UI design eye and front-end coding skills, helping teams iterate faster and ensuring feasibility of designs.

Minneapolis values practical, user-centered designers who can thrive in collaborative Midwest culture. Empathy, humility, and versatility go a long way. The job titles might not always be flashy, but the impact is real – you could be the one improving an app used by an entire state’s patients or simplifying online shopping for a top retailer.
