Aerospace & Defense: Home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Houston has a large aerospace community. NASA and its contractors (e.g., Boeing, Jacobs Engineering) seek software engineers for spacecraft simulation, robotics, and flight software. Additionally, burgeoning commercial space startups in Houston (and Blue Origin not far away in Texas) provide unique coding roles in aerospace.
Healthcare & Biotechnology: Houston’s Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world, and it’s incubating many healthtech startups. Hospitals like MD Anderson and Houston Methodist employ developers for clinical systems and research computing. Health startups (for example, in digital health records or biomedical data) see Houston as ideal due to medical domain expertise available – they need coders to build their products.
Logistics and Manufacturing: Given Houston’s massive port (Port of Houston) and manufacturing base (chemicals, industrial products), industries here increasingly rely on software to manage supply chains and plant operations. This drives demand for IT professionals skilled in enterprise software, SCADA systems, and automation programming.

In summary, Houston’s tech job market is broad-based and booming. A 2024 report even ranked Houston as one of the fastest-growing tech hubs, noting a strong inflow of tech jobs and companies. For a new coder, this means plenty of job openings and a chance to work on impactful projects (like energy sustainability or space exploration) that you might not find elsewhere.

Attractive Salaries and Cost of Living

Houston offers competitive salaries for coding professionals, often on par with national averages, but with the significant advantage of a low cost of living (no state income tax in Texas and affordable housing). The average Software Engineer salary in Houston is around $91,000 per year. While this is slightly below the national average, remember that Texas has no state income tax, effectively boosting take-home pay. Additionally, Houston’s cost of living (especially housing) is far lower than in California or the Northeast – so a $90,000 salary in Houston can provide a very comfortable lifestyle.

Furthermore, certain sectors in Houston pay much higher:

Oil & Gas Industry: Petroleum companies are known for paying a premium. A software developer working for a major oil company in Houston can often earn well above the city’s average, sometimes close to six figures for mid-level roles, due to the value of optimizing multimillion-dollar operations.
Aerospace/NASA: Many aerospace software roles (particularly if contracting for NASA) are senior or specialized positions that can pay $100,000–$130,000+ given the advanced nature of the work and security clearance requirements.
Enterprise Tech Companies: Houston is the regional home to big tech players like Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), which moved its headquarters to Houston, and Oracle and Microsoft have significant sales/engineering offices in Texas. These companies tend to align salaries with their national pay scales – meaning generous compensation for local employees.

Considering living costs, Houston’s median home price and rent are well below those in Silicon Valley, Seattle, or NYC. This means as a coder in Houston, you can potentially afford a house or larger apartment on the same salary that would have you scrimping in other cities. Also noteworthy: Texas’s absence of income tax can save you thousands annually compared to states like California or New York.

Key Industries in Houston That Hire Coders

Houston’s economy is historically centered on energy, aerospace, healthcare, and manufacturing – all of which now heavily depend on technology:

Oil & Gas / Energy: Technology is revolutionizing energy, from advanced geological modeling software to the industrial IoT networks monitoring pipelines. Coders in Houston might find themselves developing software for real-time drilling analytics, predictive maintenance on refineries, or trading platforms for energy commodities. Moreover, Houston companies are investing in renewable energy tech (wind, solar) requiring power grid management software and battery optimization algorithms – all coded by software engineers.
Aerospace: At NASA JSC and related firms, coders work on flight software for spacecraft, astronaut training simulations (virtual reality apps, etc.), and data systems for mission control.
