Class Description

Description

Join a Digital Photo Academy instructor for an unforgettable photography session at the Sandy Hook Lighthouse and Fort Hancock Historic District, one of the most scenically spectacular and historically layered venues in our New Jersey rotation. This location rewards photographers in every season with a remarkable diversity of subjects and conditions.

The Sandy Hook Lighthouse has guided ships safely into New York Harbor since 1764, making it the oldest operating lighthouse in the United States. It stands as both a photographic icon and a living piece of American maritime history. The surrounding Fort Hancock Historic District adds a second layer of visual richness: sweeping seascapes from the peninsula's northern tip, the stately yellow houses of Officers' Row, and the haunting geometry of abandoned military batteries and bunkers that once defended the harbor entrance. Every corner of this location tells a story, and your photographs will reflect that depth.

In the winter months, typically November through February, Sandy Hook becomes a destination for wildlife photographers as harbor seals haul out on a nearby jetty across from Officers' Row. Seal sightings are most reliable on calm days at low tide, and when conditions align, these playful and photogenic marine mammals make for extraordinary subjects. Throughout the year, Sandy Hook also serves as an important migratory bird stopover, offering bird photography opportunities across all four seasons.

Depending on the time of day and season, you might work on silhouette compositions at sunset over the bay, practice long exposure techniques as the light fades, capture wildlife with patience and precision, or spend your time documenting the architectural character and weathered textures of the historic structures.

What to Bring:

Bring your camera or smartphone along with any gear you can comfortably carry. Ensure all batteries are fully charged and memory cards have available space. Dress for the weather at the water's edge, which can be considerably cooler and windier than inland locations, and wear comfortable shoes for walking. A tripod can be helpful for low-light and long exposure work.

Each Composition in the Field class begins with a discussion led by one of our experienced instructors, covering the compositional and technical concepts most relevant to the venue. You and your fellow students then move through the location together, shooting and receiving personalized guidance throughout the three-hour session. The Digital Photo Academy works across more than twenty cities in the United States and Canada.

You will have an exceptional experience, develop your photographic eye for complex and varied environments, and leave with both stronger images and a clearer sense of how to approach any future location with greater skill and intention.
