Discover the Best Embroidery Classes in Seattle

Embroidery is a type of fiber art that consists of using a needle and thread to create designs and add embellishments to textiles such as clothing, pillows, blankets, bags, napkins, and other fabric items. Embroidery can be as detailed as sewing a bouquet of flowers onto a pillow or simply monogramming a towel.

Handmade embroidery has a long and ancient history – one of the oldest surviving embroidered pieces was found at the tomb of the famous Egyptian pharaoh, Tutankhamun. Today, embroidery can be done by hand or with a sewing machine. Hand embroidery, however, is the more popular form among hobbyists and fiber artists looking for a relaxing craft that promotes creativity and self-expression.

Modern fiber artists have turned to embroidery as a unique form of art with unlimited creative possibilities. Seattle is home to fiber artist Lauren Holton, a self-taught embroiderer with over 96,000 followers on Instagram who posts pictures of her beautiful embroidered projects, sells patterns and kits on Etsy, and hosts embroidery tutorials and workshops.

Why You Should Learn Embroidery in Seattle

In addition to being an enjoyable hobby, embroidery has been touted for its meditative qualities and mental health benefits. The focused act of stitching is considered a mindfulness activity, an act that produces in-the-moment awareness while increasing calmness and reducing stress. Also, learning embroidery will give you a productive craft to do in your free time that is likely better for your mental health than scrolling endlessly through social media.

Embroidery projects not only make great pieces of artwork to display in your home or give to others, but can turn into a lucrative part-time job, side hustle, or more. Many embroiderers have turned a profit from selling their projects and/or patterns on websites like Etsy and Amazon Handmade. Hand-embroidered nature scenes and floral designs are popular on Etsy, as are customized embroidery projects such as monogrammed clothing.

Craft fairs are another great way to sell your embroidery. Urban Craft Uprising, Seattle's largest indie craft show, hosts over 150 independent artists and crafters at their biannual shows. They feature shows that are open to the public as well as private events for wholesale buyers and shop owners to attend.

In addition to opening up money-making possibilities, learning embroidery will give you the chance to connect to a larger community of embroiderers and fiber artists. Established in New York in 1958, The Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA) is a national organization with the mission to foster the art of needlework by promoting the exchange of ideas and high standards of quality in embroidery. With over 240 chapters across the US and Canada, the EGA provides its members access to local meetings, workshops, and exhibitions, as well as embroidery projects and other educational resources. Serving the greater Seattle area, the EGA's Evergreen Chapter can be found on Facebook
