What you'll learn in this drawing class:

Drawing/Painting the dimensions of the human head

This is a portrait painting/drawing class with an emphasis on how to “sculpt” the 3 dimensional head in 2 dimensional space. Working from live model, sculpture, and photographs, students will develop their understanding of the head by breaking it down into simple forms. Proportion, structure, planes of the face, brushwork, lighting, and techniques for the illusion of depth will be the primary focus. We will also discuss color mixing for portraiture and how to get the most out of limited color palettes.

Painting materials will be artist’s choice of wet or dry media: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, graphite – chose something you enjoy working with. Come prepared with your choice of gessoed multi-media paper, inexpensive canvas, or inexpensive panels. We’ll be making lots of studies.

Note:
  • This is an intermediate class.
  • Knowledge of your chosen materials is a prerequisite.
  • Bring what you have. Don’t break the bank. Come prepared to do one, or several studies per session.
Recommended limited-palette portrait painting colors:
  • Titanium white (Quick Dry White for oils)
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Venetian Red
  • Raw Umber
  • Ivory Black
