Ethics by Design Series: Democracy, Privacy & Technology

Western democracies are under new pressures from digital technologies. Whereas before, the internet was seen as an exciting new platform to increase political engagement, encourage the participation of previously underrepresented groups, and improve innovation, now we understand that new forms of communication have created new arenas of power.

This workshop will focus on the way that technology is changing democracy and the theories of privacy.

This session will include:

• Introduction to theories of democracy
• Exploration of the role of the individual in democracies and why privacy is instrumental in democracies
• Workshopping through different thought experiments and scenario planning
• Recommendations for future actions to take in your organisation

***This is a standalone module in the Ethics by Design Series, which encourages you to think more deeply about the products we design and how they are changing our lives and what it means to be human. Preparation

• This class is taken completely online via Zoom
• You will need access to a laptop or computer with a working webcam and microphone as well as a strong internet connection.
• Course set up information will be emailed to all students signed up around 24 hours before the course launches.
