Abstract Drawing: Level 1

This is not your grandmother's drawing class. Get loose in this unconventional drawing class using a variety of drawing tools and materials on paper.

The earliest civilizations created abstractions through shapes and pattern. The 20th Century brought abstract art to Western culture through Fauvism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Drawing extended the creative practices performed throughout history.

Drawing is a way for anyone, regardless of professional artistic experience, to tap into their intrinsic imagination. Abstract drawing is a way to express emotions visually, work out creative muscles, and discover something new.

In this course, students will broaden their understanding of the abstract genre by learning from artistic role models. Prompts will be used to apply abstract drawing concepts like contrast, rhythm, balance, and focal point. Engaging activities will enable students to create compositions using the fundamentals of shape, line, and texture.

This class is for creative individuals desiring to express their inner world through visual media. Professionals and beginning artists are welcome as well, as abstract drawing aids innovation, composition planning, and thinking “outside the box.”

• 1 Graphite pencil
• 1 Charcoal stick, jumbo size
• 1 ArtGraf water soluble carbon square, black
• 1 Ink, black (any kind: india, sumi, etc.)
• 1 White vinyl eraser
• 1 Chip brush, 2" width
• 1 Large round brush
• 2 Heavy Duty Clips, found in drawing section for using with drawing boards
