System Requirements: To make the workshop a great experience for all, you will need:
  • Your own headset (isn’t it the worst when someone is muffled or echo-y in meetings? Help us avoid this by bringing your own headset).
  • Your own laptop and camera, to dial in individually. We have found it dramatically improves the quality of the discussion if everyone is dialed in with their own laptop (camera on) rather than sharing laptops or dialing via the conference room.
  • A nice, quiet, private place to dial in: If you’re sharing a conference room with other attendees, please do still bring your own laptop to dial in. If you're dialing from home, find a quiet corner without folks walking behind you and such (it can be weirdly distracting to see roommates periodically walking behind you).
  • Print out the worksheet(s).  This will be attached in the calendar invite and emailed to students before the session
  • Download Zoom if you haven’t already
  • Make sure Zoom is working on your computer

What you'll learn in this management course:

Knowing how to give feedback that is specific, actionable, and inspiring is the hallmark of a great leader. In this lab, you’ll learn the science of feedback and practice giving effective feedback, even in tough situations.

Pre-work: Decide on a piece of feedback you want to give someone at work. No need to perfect what you plan to say (we’ll do this in the workshop) – just come ready to work on this feedback scenario.

During this lab you will:
  • Learn a four-step process for giving feedback
  • Practice opening the conversation by decreasing defensiveness
  • Understand how to turn feedback into a two-way conversation using questions that check perception, joint problem-solve, make a request, and determine commitment/ understanding
  • Learn how to build trust and self-efficacy in directs through strengthening their strengths
  • Practice asking for feedback to build a feedback culture within your team
  • Craft a real-world feedback script and receive feedback on your feedback
After this lab, you will know how to:
  • Convert poor quality feedback into high quality feedback
  • Apply the LifeLabs Playing Cards Method to give specific and actionable feedback
  • Detect signals that reveal someone is not ready to receive feedback
  • Reduce defensiveness in feedback recipients
  • Ask for feedback effectively
  • Create a team culture where giving and receiving feedback is normal and expected
