Understand the Rhino 3D interface and key modeling tools
Learn to navigate and create 2D and 3D geometry in Rhino
Model a base plate and insole board using a digital last
Design custom heel and wedge components suitable for 3D printing
Understand key considerations for digital design in footwear
Gain insight into real-world prototyping, printing, and attachment methods
Leave with a fully modeled heel design and the skills to iterate further

Session 1: Introduction to Rhino

Rhino interface walkthrough
Setting up units and presets for footwear
Drawing curves, lines, and 2D shapes
Intro to solid modeling: extrude, revolve, loft, Boolean operations

Session 2: Base Plate Design

Using a 3D last as your base
Modeling a base plate and mock insole board
Step-by-step modeling of a simple heel
Comparing multiple methods (revolve, loft, sweep)
Live demo + student build time

Session 3: Basic Heel Design

Intro to more advanced Rhino tools
Building off your base plate for modularity and customization
Tips for modeling symmetry and refining surfaces

Session 4: Complex Heel & Wedge Forms + Design for 3D Printing & Final Critique

Computer with Rhino 7 or 8 installed (trial version is fine)
3-button mouse highly recommended (vs. trackpad)
Internet connection + Zoom account
Instructor will provide access to:

Shared 3D last model (7cm heel height, almond toe)
Reference images and example files

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy

All classes and workshops are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Class Make-up Policy

For multiple-day classes, if you have to miss a day, you are responsible for getting the information that will catch you up on missed information during the class hours. Any additional time you will need to finish the project due to your absence shall be signed-up as a studio-hour session at a $150/day rate.

We take your safety seriously. With COVID-19, circumstances may change quickly, at the last minute. Please communicate with us, if you are traveling from afar. We expect that you will be healthy, and that if you feel sick slightly, you will let us know and we will postpone the course. We will have hand sanitizers, surface wipes, we will wash hands frequently, and each student will have their own tool box to use during the course. Any shared equipment will be cleaned in between use.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
