Olivia Foschi and Yaala Ballin

Teaches at New York Jazz Workshop

Olivia Foschi:

Olivia was born in San Francisco and grew up in Italy. Although she was always drawn to the study of music, she decided to delve deeper into formal vocal training in 2001 when she was given the opportunity to study classical Nepali voice with well-established singer and composer Aavaas. This experience brought immense musical inspiration and left her intrigued and eager to explore the different facets of her voice. She moved back to Italy in 2002 and earned a B.A. in English Literature (cum laude) at John Cabot University in Rome in 2004 while taking voice lessons with Luisa Cottifogli (Imola). She moved on to study jazz voice with Cecilia Izzi at the University of Music in Rome and nonverbal communication with singer/songwriter Grazia Di Michele. Since then, she attended countless music seminars and workshops both in Europe and in the U.S., and took classes at the Academy of Music in Bologna. In 2009, she opened for E.C. Scott presenting her project Liv’n’Symposium and won the vocal competition that took place during the “Jazz Women in Blues” festival (promoted by Naima Club, Forlì, Italy). She was awarded full scholarship at the Venice Voice Academy in L.A. for the 2010 summer-session. As a result, she moved to New York one year ago and has since been recording, performing and continuing her studies. In September she presented her quartet at the Dumbo Arts Festival and has recently played with Larry Ham and sat in with Javier Arau and the Jazz Academy Big Band. She also collaborates with very diverse musical projects that cover a variety of different styles including jazz, funk, dub, folk, and is currently working on a new album.

Yaala Ballin:

Yaala Ballin, vocalist, was born in Israel and moved to New York in 2004. In addition to frequent performances in the city's prestigious jazz venues including Smalls, Smoke and Birdland, she has also toured in Europe and the former Soviet Union, and has been a featured artist in international jazz festivals in Israel. Her album, Travlin' Alone was released in 2009 on Smalls Records. As a clinician, she has conducted masterclasses and workshops in New York, Europe and Israel, and is an instructor in the continuing Bi-Communal "Jazz Futures" Program in Cyprus, sponsored by The US Department of State.
