Sayumi Yokouchi

Teaches at Brooklyn Metal Works

Sayumi Yokouchi was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She moved to the U.S. in 1990 and began her practice in metalsmithing at Cabrillo College in California. She earned her BFA in Metal Arts from California College of the Arts, followed by an MFA in Metal Arts from State University of New York in New Paltz. She has taught at many metals programs including Rhode Island School of Design, Kutztown University, State University of New York, New Paltz, Penland School of Craft, Hong Kong Design Institute, China, and a Contemporary jewelry workshop in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She currently teaches at 92nd St Y and New York University in New York City. Exhibitions include: Museum of Arts and Design (New York), SOFA Chicago and New York, Society of Arts and Crafts (Boston, MA), and among others. Notable publications include: American Craft, Metalsmith, and Lark Books’ jewelry series.

    Excellent class, Ms Yokouchi is a gifted jeweler/artist, and a natural teacher. She gives clear instruction and corrects you quickly and gently:) Cannot recommend this class enough, it has expanded my skill set tremendously.
