Kaaren Lewis

Teaches at The Village Workshop

A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Kaaren Lewis studied painting there with John Caceare. After completing her studies, she traveled west and enrolled in the Sculpture Program at The California School of Fine Arts under the tutelage of sculptor, Gabriel Kohn. Eventually returning east Ms. Lewis settled into a loft in lower Manhattan where she proceeded to develop her career as a graphic designer, illustrator and painter.

As an illustrator she used the watercolor medium as her principle means of expression. Her watercolor work often appeared in the Society of illustrators Annual Exhibition as well as the prestigious Art Directors Show.

In 2004 Ms. Lewis opened the Village Workshop in her Manhattan loft space where she presently teaches classes in watercolor painting.

    The instructor had an amazing studio and was very kind and welcoming! The class wasn't as traditional as I had liked, I expected a bit more on color mixing and more about how the technique of watercolor is really supposed to be used. Nonetheless, I had a great time! She really allows her students to be independent and have fun with it. I think it's a great class for beginners because you just get to give it a go without any real pressure, but I'll admit I did feel a bit intimidated by her intermediate students who had paintings already half finished. The instructor is a very cool person and has a lovely studio, it was very inspiring. The materials provided were also top notch! I left with a great piece and a good feeling overall.

    I enjoyed the class. I wish I had more time to truly grasp the concept of Watercolor. I thought the instructor would do a demonstration first so we’d know more or less where to start. Glad I took the course though.

    The teacher was kind and welcoming and the space, materials, and lighting were excellent. She provided snacks in the middle of the 6-9 PM time slot--which makes sense--because it is during dinner time. I was disappointed with the experience, though, because I didn't feel that the teacher really was able to help me LEARN. She briefly showed me techniques--but the task--to copy a picture--while she made squares and then divided up the photo into quadrants and told me to "draw it" in pencil and then I would use watercolor to complete it--felt beyond what I had been assigned to play with it ben was able to accomplish. Looking back, I wish I had been given a scrap piece of canvas and been told to play. Instead of the evening being relaxing (the teacher told me to "just have fun with it"), I felt disappointed that my work was more a reflection of the teacher's effort than my own.

    Kareen has an amazing space for the watercolor class....an exceptionally large, extremely well lit room....each personal space for the student is wonderfully set up with a large palette, numerous brushes, water, tissues, paper.....all the finest...ARCHES and WINSOR NEWTON. Also, there are folders of so many pictures, all gridded so ready for the person to draw on paper. Kareen is constantly walking around to be available to answer questions, demonstrate a technique, offer suggestions... Definitely one of the most enjoyable three hours of watercolor. Do attend!

    A really great place to learn more about watercolor. Karen is helpful, but gives the students lots of independence. It is not a typical class, no step by step guides but it helps you be able to take the skills you learned and use them when you come home. Definitely should try!

    This art workshop was simply wonderful. I couldn't have spent my Sunday afternoon better! I loved the peace this environment gave me and the other artists who work around you are just lovely.     Kaaren is extremely friendly and helpful. The space for class is fantastic with very nice lighting. This isn't a true "class" where techniques are taught en masse but is instead a workshop where individuals (including a large number of regulars) work on their pieces with Kaaren's assistance.

    Enjoyed the class and learned a lot. This was our first time trying watercolor. Kaaren helped us select a suitable first time subject from hundreds of samples. Next we learned how to sketch in on the watercolor paper. Then she got us started painting. With lots of direction and a few tweaks from her we had a reasonably good looking first piece. I Highly recommend Village workshop.

    I LOVE this class! Kaaren is a great instructor, and the space is bright and light-filled to do your watercolor paintings. There are limited seats for each class, so I recommend booking far in advance.

    I had so much fun in Kaaren's class! Very warm and welcoming, class size was perfect, and the space was beautiful. I could see this being a weekly routine for me. It's a relaxing and rewarding way to end your day.

    The instructor was wonderful, and I did have a nice time. I thought the course would be more basic learning about layering, brushes, mixing color, etc. I was surprised that I had to actually drawer the picture I chose to paint. There are some benefits to being thrown in to the big picture straight away, but I was not looking for a drawing class. I'm sure if I returned I would be taught more about the things I want to learn, but the open forum format for me as a beginner wasn't great. The class was mostly regulars, all of whom were very nice, but with 1 instructor and 3 newbies, I felt she was a bit stretched.

    Although the class was filled with mostly regulars the instructor was good about going around and helping our us newbies. She took her time with each of us to make sure that we where comfortable with her instruction but most importantly she wanted to make sure that we were enjoying the process. Everyone in the class was warm and welcoming and I look forward to attending another class to finish my project.

    A thoroughly enjoyable class with Kaaren in her beautiful studio. Kaaren is friendly and encouraging, and gives every student personal attention. She provides the best materials for the class. I do find the class a little pricey as 1 class was not enough for me to finish a painting and I'll have to go back to complete it.

    I've always wanted to learn more about watercolor painting and am so glad I signed up for this class! The instructor gave me lots of individual attention and feedback to help me get started. Everyone in the class was friendly. I will definitely be signing up for more watercolor classes!

    I really enjoyed the class which was held in a relaxing and welcoming space. I left with a finished painting and found the materials provided to be very high quality. I had expected more skills to be explicitly taught and would have liked more instruction to the group as a whole - it often felt like you had to listen in to what someone else was being told in order to pick up tips! I certainly had a good time but am not sure that I would find it worthwhile to return unless there was a more structured learning environment where I knew what specific skills/techniques I should know by the end of the class.

    Great class - the classes are kept small so the instructor can be really hands on with each person. She helps you set up and teaches you basics and guides as you paint.

    Great class! As a beginner, I was a little worried about being able to keep up with the class, but it really does cater to all levels. Kaaren makes sure that each person gets some one-on-one help/advice from her. She's welcoming, kind and patient! I'll definitely be returning for another session.

    I really enjoyed this class. The artist's loft is gorgeous, the art studio is spacious, and her cats are so cute! Her approach to teaching watercolor is a little different than you might expect - rather than take you through the basics of mixing and diluting colors, she has you choose an image from her image library and copy it into your own watercolor painting. She walks around to students giving tips and tricks. I actually learned a lot from her in one session and ended up with a finished painting, which surprised me. Most people though will probably take more than one session to finish their paintings, depending on how complicated it is.

    Kareen was a great teacher and made you feel right at home. The class was fun and small enough that you can get 1-1 attention. I learned a bunch of things I didnt know before and will be coming back. Thanks!! Couple notes: - There is a cat around the studio, so be aware of that if you have bad allergies - You will likely not finish your piece of work in one shot, so be aware of that OR pick a really easy picture to do - You can bring a picture to base your art off of if you want

    I love Kaaren's personal attention. She will work one one one with you. Yet, with that she also has to give her attention to other students so sometimes you have to wait for her to finish with other students. Luckily, most students are regulars so they just work independently. As a new student I needed more guidance which she gave, along with some snacks and coffee too. That's a little extra something nice even if you don't eat anything. I also can eat my dinner there; it's a causal atmosphere.

    I couldn't recommend Kaaren enough. She was a friendly teacher who made me feel right at home in her class. She was helpful explaining the watercolor process and setting us up with all the materials. She was available for one-on-one instruction but also let us be creative with our paintings. I ended up with a great painting and even better experience trying something new.

    For not being an artist, I am coming out with pretty good watercolor paintings. I have been learning techniques and feel that I am having fun while learning. Our Teacher Kareen is fabulous and has a lot of patience, I usually make mistakes and she help me fix them.

    Such a beautiful class and teacher! I found a place I can call home for my first guided art classes. With simple direction I was able to create art that I never have been able to create before. My friends didn't believe I painted it, which was sad but flattering at the same time :)

    Kaaren does a nice job spending time with each student but much of the time is spent painting on your own. I appreciated that she was focused on getting us into painting right away, just a quick demo and had us on our way! It's a great space and Kaaren provides all the materials you would need in class. Great class and I plan to go again!

    This was my 3rd class at the village workshop and it wont be my last. The studio is beautiful with amazing light. Kaaren is so welcoming and thoughtful. Everyone is working at their own pace. You will have brand new students as well as students who have been going for years. Its a real relaxing 3 hours. Well worth it!

    The size of the class and level of instruction were intimate. All the materials provided were generous and of high quality.     Kaaren is amazing! There are students of all types of levels and she gives each and everyone one of them the time they deserve. I love this class and would return if it wasn't for my server allergy to cats (a nice black kitty came to visit during the middle of the class). Highly recommend this class.

    I managed to squeeze in 4 classes during our 4 month stay in the city and am so sorry I didn't get in more !! Kaaren is a wonderful teacher and so very patient with multiple levels of students. We never had more than 8 students so she has plenty of time to move around and give individual instruction. She is very encouraging and is also a gracious host. Will most definitely schedule another class when we are back in NYC for a visit!!!!'

    The studio is terrific, fully stocked with all materials of the best quality, in a delightful and conducive atmosphere. Kaaren is a wonderful teacher. She is a terrific and enthusiastic artist herself and she guides and is supportive every step of the way.

    This class was incredible! The teacher is amazing, and her studio is bright and airy. She provides top-quality materials and personalized instruction. I would recommend this class for any beginner. I have no skills, but I walked away with a beautiful painting.

    Kaaren is awesome! & so are the other ladies who come in to paint. Great environment, everyone is very helpful and encouraging. I'm working on a painting now, going back next week! It doesn't matter if you've been watercolor painting for years or never have before! :) oh and you can go alone or bring a friend, doesn't matter.
