The monoprinting class was fantastic. The instructor is an experienced professional, both in the art and in teaching. I learned several different techniques that can be used alone or combined to make a single print. I hope to take her other classes when she is back in NYC.
  • Drawing with Ink

When one of the attendees asked the instructor what the difference was between indian ink, sumi ink, and acrylic ink...she was unable to answer. I find this unsettling given that this was an "Indian Ink" drawing class and that questions is pretty basic and one which I have often wondered about. The three hour long class started out with an experimental drawing in which we made "any kind of marks:" on the paper to loosen us up. I get that it's always good to play with a new material to become familiar with it, but I paid $50 and I expected some instruction, tips...even EXAMPLES of what drawing or painting in this medium can produce. I've been to drawing classes in which instructors brought work so we could see the possibilities to aspire to. Our class consisted of collecting whatever was in the room to produce a still life and then draw it with paint brush. My inspiration was an upside down stool. An instructor should choose carefully the subject to be drawn to fit all levels given that this was an open class for beginners. It was less about learning the wonders of indian ink than trying to navigate through perspective hell. I walked away not learning anything and feeling like I wasted $50.

The class was on point and the instructor very clear, informative and personable. She provided practical information and insights in a short time frame and followed up by sending all participants a list of grants, which is super helpful.
