Decorus Atelier and James, the founder and lead instructor, were fantastic. I’m just beginning my creative journey and have very little experience, but this introductory course was practical, filled with interesting tidbits, and accessible enough for me to learn real techniques. The class size was intimate and moved at my own pace which worked really well for the way my brain processes information. I felt comfortable and welcomed by everyone else. Highly recommend! -

This class was a wonderful surprise for my mom and I. James and Diane were very kind and gave us individualized attention and feedback. The studio itself provided a great ambiance with background music to keep to focused and relaxed. We really felt immersed in the moment. We learned a lot about the basics of drawing and how to use the different sketching tools. My mom and I were both pretty impressed with our sketches and they would not have come along so nicely without the guidance provided by James. We strongly recommend taking courses at The Decorus Atelier of Figurative Art and hope to come back soon! -

James Barbour offers a rare combination of being a master painter & sculptor together with being an amazing teacher. He is motivated to teach, gives of himself, and enjoys seeing students learn and grow. He is insightful and patient with an incredible understanding of anatomy of the human form. The studio has lots of character and offers a warm environment to work. I learned more than I imagined about drawing sculpting and anatomy. A gem of a find in NYC. Highly recommended. -
