What you'll learn in this writing class:

Writing About Your Practice looks at the photo-based art world to help students create the texts that will allow you to have your own dialog for maintaining a practice that is both engaging and potentially more financially viable. Through lectures, class discussions, and interactions with guests artists and guest art-world professionals, and guided personal research, students will develop and present a basic professional portfolio that includes a cover letter, CV, artist statement, and biography.

This portfolio can be used for their websites and/or project packets, galleries, dealers, agents, and competitions, residency and grant committees.

Topics will include:

  • Creating and maintaining an online presence and a community through text.
  • Writing cover letters, resumes, and CVs.
  • Writing artist statements and project statements to accompany portfolios.
  • Writing press releases for exhibitions in traditional and non-traditional exhibition spaces.
  • Writing residency proposals and grant application essays.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Refund Policy
In the event a student must cancel their registration for a workshop, they may do so any time before and up to 14 days prior to the workshop, and will receive a 100% refund of workshop cost plus any material fees. In the event a student must cancel attendance from a workshop after the registration deadline (14 days prior to the start of the workshop), this will be considered a withdrawal. The workshop costs and materials fees are not refundable but a 20% discount will be given toward another workshop.

There are situations that arise in which a workshop may need to be cancelled. In the event of a cancellation, students will be notified as soon as possible. Students are entitled to a full refund for the workshop cost and materials fee up to one week prior to workshop. A credit can also be given in the amount paid for the class to use at a later date. Penumbra is not responsible for any non-refundable travel costs (such as airfare, train tickets or accommodation costs). We would advise you to consider purchasing travel insurance.

Due to the intensive nature of our workshops, we cannot offer makeup sessions outside of workshop time or in future workshops. Instructors are not required to bring students up to date during scheduled workshop time for missed days or lateness. Refunds will not be given for absences or no shows.
