For this fall session, students will read La mort du roi Tsongor (2002) by Laurent Gaudé.
Our teacher Claire, a writer and publisher, will facilitate the conversation to explore the world and words of the book. Each week, we will split our attention between reading comprehension of the assigned pages and discussion of the work’s major themes and ideas.
About the Book:
After spending his youth expanding the borders of his kingdom, Tsongor has grown weary of war and deaths. As an old man, he rules over a vast, rich and peaceful land. Everything’s looking up now: he will finally be able to step down and rest. But on the eve of his daughter’s wedding, a lone, mysterious rider appears. Within days, two great nations prepare for a senseless conflict over a beautiful woman, and an old, sad king looks on as his world and his family fall apart. Bursting with color and raw emotion, this novel reads like the lost fragment of a Greek tragedy. It received the prix Goncourt des lycéens and the prix des Libraires and adapted for the theater.
Prerequisite: The class will be taught in French and requires a good understanding of written and spoken French.
