The Jalopy Jr. Dance program welcomes students of all skill levels. It is for those students who would love to dance to the American traditional music they love to play. Beyond learning to dance for the sake of dancing, learning to feel the beat of the music will certainly help with keeping the beat on stage.
We will focus on social dances of the Americas. These will roughly be grouped into Square/Circle dance, Line Dance, and social partner dancing. Square/Circle dance will mostly focus on Square dancing from the southeastern Appalachians and Western United States but also include Yiddish Circle dance, Rueda (a form of Salsa Square Dance), and Irish Set dancing. Social partner dancing will include learning the Waltz, TwoStep (Cajun), and Salsa. (Maybe we'll even have a chance to put some Polka dance in!) The Line dance portion of the class will mostly draw from the Country Western tradition.
We are focused on building community and teaching folk and traditional music and movement.
We have a place for every level of learner and every financial situation. Along with the Fabulous Jalopy Theatre and School of Music, we offer private and group classes to people of all ages from newborn to adult. The experienced teachers at Jalopy are here to encourage musical exploration through singing, dancing and playing instruments like fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, percussion, and more! Rental instruments and financial aid are available!
