One key to meditation is the phenomenon of “presence.” Mindfulness, meditation, contemplation, and remembrance are all based in a fundamental human capacity — presence — which, unfortunately, is rarely experienced in our fast-moving, depersonalized, technologized existence.
We will explore the comprehensive nature of presence, a state of self-awareness that encompasses a spectrum of human functions: bodily sensation, breath, emotion, thought, intuition, all the way to the subtlest state of non-dual experience. In other words, presence is the portal to Reality.
Presence leads us to a true experience of the Spiritual Heart, our fundamental cognitive instrument through which we experience relationship and know existence qualitatively. But lest we think the discovery of presence and heart is attained merely through intellectual or psychological means, I would like to quote a great Sufi, Abul Hasan Kharaqani, from the 11th century:
