Vega Sicilia Unico Vertical Dinner

To lovers of Spanish wines, Vega-Sicilia needs no introduction. This legendary estate has long been recognized as producing one of the world’s finest wines. In 1859 Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves inherited the property from his father. Don Eloy traveled to Bordeaux in 1864 and brought back vine shoots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Malbec, Merlot, and Pinot Noir to plant in his two adjacent parcels in Vega-Sicilia and Carrascal at Valbuena de Duero. From 1890 to 1903 when Antonio Herrero took over, the wines were known as Bodegas de Lacanda and then as Hijos de Antonio Herrero. Until 1915 much of the wine was sold in bulk as Rioja.

Then under the management of Domingo Garramiola, also known as Txomin, the great age of Vega-Sicilia began. Txomin earned many prizes and accolades for his wines in the 1920’s until his passing in 1933. He was responsible for putting this mythical wine on the map. The estate was sold in 1952 and again in 1966 before falling into the able hands of the Alvarez family in 1982, which is the current owner and steward of the land. 

This fascinating dinner will highlight beautifully aged examples of this Spanish treasure.
