What you'll learn in this wine tasting class:

Learn to taste like a Master Sommelier. In this introductory tasting course, we will hone your deductive tasting skills and teach you how to tell the difference between classic grape varietals, based on three elements of wine: sight, nose, and palette. Join us in tasting three red wines and three white wines as we explore all that a glass of wine has to offer the senses; meanwhile, learning what makes great wine. Perfect for beginners and connoisseurs alike, this class is open to every experience level. Tasting grid and blind tasting supplies will be provided.

Blind tasting is a really cool, complex, and interesting thing to learn about, but the presentation here was a bit off. Very slow at the beginning, then very rushed at the end. I left class having learned...that there's a lot to learn. Not sure if there's a natural precursor that should have been recommended (I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable about the science of viticulture and vinification (grape-growing and wine-making), so I didn't expect this class to be for novice wine drinkers), or if the class just needs a little more structure to it beyond sampling wines and rather randomly guessing the varietals, but whatever the case is, it could have been a better experience than it was.

I really wanted to like this class, especially since Corkbuzz was founded by a Master Sommelier, but unfortunately the class was poorly managed through and through. The instructor was knowledgeable, but had very poor time management. Halfway into the class, he was still giving us an overview of wines, and we still hadn't had a sip of wine. New York Vintners does a much better job of making it fun by greeting you with a glass of champagne. At 1.5 hours, we've only tasted the first of the 6 wines, which means we sped through the last few wines and stayed for another 35 minutes past the end time. Even though there was bread and cheese provided, they were positioned in such a way that not everyone was within arm's length of it, and trying to shift the cheeseboard around was a pretty high risk venture with all the glasses in front of us.
