The class was great! The instructor was clearly very knowledgeable and did a wonderful job. The location (i.e., room/space) could have been improved as there was very little room to move around when going up to taste cocktails.

Discover the Best Mixology Classes in NYC

Mixology is the art of crafting cocktails and mixed drinks, combining different spirits, juices, herbs, and other ingredients to create complex yet balanced flavor profiles. With so many bars and lounges serving inventive and delicious drinks, it's no surprise that many New Yorkers are interested in learning how to craft their own cocktails. Luckily, the city is home to a range of excellent in-person mixology classes where enthusiasts can learn the art of cocktail making from expert bartenders. Whether you're a novice looking to master the basics or an experienced mixologist looking to refine your skills, New York City has something to offer.

Below, we'll share some of the best in-person mixology classes in the city, providing you with all the information you need to take your cocktail game to the next level.

Why You Should Learn Mixology in NYC

New York City is an excellent place to learn mixology and put those skills to use. The city has a rich history of mixology, and many of its iconic bars and restaurants have been serving drinks for over a century. The city is also home to several prestigious institutions that provide mixology classes, such as the Institute of Culinary Education and the International Bartender's Association. These programs provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the art of mixology, including techniques for creating complex cocktails and learning about the different types of spirits.

Additionally, New York City is home to a diverse range of cultures, influencing the creation of unique and creative cocktails. The Italian influence is evident in the popularity of classic Italian aperitifs like the Negroni or Aperol Spritz, as well as the use of Italian liqueurs such as amaro in various cocktails. The Irish heritage has contributed to the prevalence of Irish whiskey and the popularity of drinks like Irish Coffee. This fusion of cultures has led to innovative creations that blend flavors and techniques from different traditions. Mixologists in New York City constantly experiment with new ingredients, drawing inspiration from the diverse culinary landscape, resulting in unique and exciting cocktails that reflect the city's multicultural character.

New York City is also well-known for its nightlife culture, with numerous bars and restaurants serving innovative and cutting-edge drinks. Many of these establishments are known for their extensive cocktail menus and skilled bartenders who are constantly experimenting with new ingredients and techniques. This provides an excellent opportunity for aspiring mixologists to gain hands-on experience and learn from some of the best in the business.

Finally, New York City hosts several annual events and competitions that showcase the best mixologists in the world. The Manhattan Cocktail Classic, Tales of the Cocktail, and the New York City Wine and Food Festival are popular events attracting industry professionals and enthusiasts from around the globe.

In-Person Mixology Classes & Schools in NYC

Students hoping to attend an in-person mixology class in New York City have many options to choose from. Live mixology classes guided by an instructor are a great way to get hands-on experience using what are often unfamiliar tools and techniques. Students can get feedback on their creations from their instructors and peers while learning a new skill in a professional and fun environment.

CocuSocial Cooking Classes has a Classic and Creative Cocktails course at its location in Midtown Manhattan. In this two-hour course, beginner mixologists will learn to create some of the world’s most well-known cocktails before creating a more unique version of the same drink. For instance, students will make a basic martini and then boost their skills by upgrading it to a Lavender Lemontini. The class also covers the foundational elements of a Margarita and an Old Fashioned.

Flowers and herbs are commonly used to enhance flavors, complement spirits, and make beautiful garnishes. To that end, the New York Botanical Garden also provides a few mixology classes to New Yorkers. For instance, its Mixology 101 class teaches students how to add floral and herbaceous ingredients to their drinks. At the end of the course, students will create their own tincture (a concentrated infusion usually flavored with herbs, flowers, or spices) to take home with them.

Whiskey lovers may appreciate the course selection available through Craftsman Ave. This school provides a course called Barrel Age your own Whiskey and Craft Cocktails. In this class, students learn the little-known art of coopering as they assemble and personalize an aging barrel for their drink of choice. There is also a Date Night version of this course, where each couple will share a bottle of wine and a pizza as they complete the workshop.

Brooklyn residents can attend classes at The Brooklyn Kitchen. One available course, Next Level Mixology, is geared towards more experienced mixologists. Priced at $100, students will spend a few hours learning the art of muddling and experimenting with various flavored accents and syrups. The final portion of the class discusses the creation of a signature cocktail for each participant.

Located in artsy Greenwich Village, Abigail’s Kitchen offers a class called Mocktails: The Art of the Spritz. This class teaches students four foundational mocktails before letting them explore their creativity and design two mocktails of their own. This course focuses on combining fresh fruit juices and purees, teas, and non-alcoholic bitters to develop refreshing mocktails that are equally enticing as their alcoholic counterparts.

Virtual Mixology Classes & Schools

If there aren’t any in-person mixology classes available near you or you’d like to explore other options, there are several virtual mixology courses to choose from. One primary drawback to virtual mixology classes is the lack of physical interaction with ingredients and equipment. While instructors may demonstrate techniques, you may not have the same tactile experience as in an in-person class. However, virtual classes eliminate geographical limitations, allowing you to join a mixology class taught by experts from anywhere in the world. This opens up a wider range of instructors and diverse cocktail recipes to explore.

Food Craft provides plenty of courses, both in the art of mixology and in numerous other related skills. There is a Tipsy Bubble Tea course that is ideal for those looking for a unique virtual learning experience. Students in this course will learn about the cultural significance of bubble tea and cook their own tapioca pearls. They will also create a combination of fruity, sweet, and creamy beverages, both with and without alcohol.

Food Craft also provides a Cocktails & Mocktails class available live online. As non-alcoholic beverages become more popular, learning to make impressive and delicious mocktails is a skill that no mixologist should be without. This course covers the basics of refreshing Hawaiian drinks, like an Aloha O'e Cocktail and a Hula Lemonade Mocktail.

Private Group Mixology Classes in NYC

Whether you’re a small business that needs a unique team bonding activity or your friends need to mix up your daily routine, CourseHorse offers several online group mixology classes in New York City. A private mixology class can be a cost-effective alternative to a bar or restaurant. You and your group members can enjoy a night of cocktails and socialize in a private setting without the added expense of going out to a bar or restaurant.

If your group wants a quick exploration of mixology basics, there is a Private Mixology Class that could be a good fit. This course is customizable to your group’s interest. Before attending, you will select three cocktails from an extensive list of classics, including daiquiris, mint juleps, mojitos, and Manhattans. Students can provide their own materials or pay an extra fee to have supplies shipped to their homes prior to class.

For those with LGBTQIA+ group members, the Pride Month Virtual Mixology Workshop is definitely worth checking out. In addition to pride-themed cocktails, this course provides ingredients from local queer vendors in the community. And if your crew wants a snack along with their cocktails, there is a Guacamole and Margaritas Workshop as well. This course teaches students plenty of secrets to making restaurant-quality guacamole and margaritas without leaving your home.

CourseHorse provides several benefits to folks who attend its private events. Groups can change the size of their booking after making a reservation if needed, so there’s no worry if plans change at the last minute. There are no added fees for booking, and their programs are supported on a diverse range of platforms.
