What you'll learn in this cake decorating class:

Learn the basics with Cake Decorating 101. You’ll learn how to properly fill and crumb coat a cake and then we’ll teach you how to pipe like a pro. We’ll cover tools and piping skills including shells, stars, zig-zags, and rosettes. At the end of the class, you will have your own 5” decorated cake to take home.

Please Note:

  • Classes will begin on time so please be sure to allow enough time to arrive and prepare prior to the start of the class. The studio will be open to students 15 minutes prior to beginning of class to allow for set up. Classes occasionally run over time, please let the instructor know if you need to leave early or immediately at the end of class so they can plan for it.
  • All tools and equipment will be supplied for use during each class, unless otherwise noted in the class outline.
  • Feel free to take pictures and post to social media. We do not allow video or voice recording. Please also refrain from sharing class materials or step-by-step pictures.
  • Cell phones should be silenced while in class. Please excuse yourself to the store area if you need to make or take a call.
  • Please wear closed toed shoes; flip-flops and other open sandals are not permitted. If you have long hair please keep it tied up for the duration of the class.

Refund Policy
NY Cake Academy classes are not eligible for refunds, however they are transferrable. Students reserve the right to reschedule their class to an alternative date or time up until 7 days prior to the class date.

You may choose to give your place in class to another student. Please let us know in advance so we can have our paperwork in order. Class time may not be split up though. The same student will be enrolled in all days of a multi-day class.

All deposits & fees are forfeited for no shows.

We do not provide make-up classes.

Will we learn how to make the buttercream frosting and the different consistencies?

Not how to make it, as they sell a certain type off mix there, but they do speak a few minutes ability about consistency. This is more about how to frost a cake with buttercream and practicing piping techniques.

Hi Tiara! In the cake decorating 101 class students do NOT learn how to make different buttercreams. The frosting is pre-made and the focus is on decorating techniques with various tips in a piping bag and how to fill and frost a cake.

Hi Mackenzie! We weren’t given the recipes for frosting etcetera. Pretty sure there were eggs whites in there and butter. So if you can manipulate i would say yes just to give you an idea of consistency and methods.

Cake Decorating 101

The class was a lot of fun! The setup allows you to have your own work station in a professional baking kitchen, so you feel like a pro from the start. The instructor, John, demonstrated each step clearly and carefully, and came around to check individual work and offer feedback and assistance. The best part was getting to decorate your own mini cake during the later part of the class and then take it home. The only part that I didn't love was that some of the other students were a bit competitive and made it a point to watch what everyone else was doing and to critique it. Overall, it was very enjoyable and I'd definitely take another class again!

I enjoyed the class very much . The instructor John was amazing very hospitable and he was attentive and very patient and professional throughout the entire class . I will definitely come back for another class. Highly recommended!

Loved it but parents should not put their young children in it. It is a three hour intensive class and they have the attention span of adhd mice. The class was really good though and you get 10% off store purchases!

The class itself was enjoyable at a very basic level. to give you an idea of how beginner it was: we spent about 15 minutes going over how to properly put the icing coupler into the icing bag. this is not an exaggeration. I understand everyone is at a different level, however that aside, I didn't feel it was worth the high price based on the skills that were outlined in the course description.. The course description specifically stated that we would "cover tools and piping skills including; shells, stars, zig-zags, rosettes, writing, drop flowers and leaves. Each student will get 2 layers of cake to work with, buttercream and a choice of delicious fillings." Unfortunately of the (9) skills advertised in the course description, we only covered frosting, shells, and stars.. the course did not include learning how to fill a cake, pipe zig zags, rosettes, writing, drop flowers or choice of filling. I specifically chose this class because it said we would be covering flowers and rosettes. we did not cover this at all. I contacted Course Horse and they offered me a 20% coupon for a future class. I don't really think that makes up for learning less than half of what was promised on the website. I would recommend skipping this course unless you are only looking for a 'just for fun' beginner type class to learn very, very basic skills.
