Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this furniture class:

Craft your own contemporary and minimalist side table, constructed using oak and classic half-lap joints

Woodworking is a hobby that has historically required a connection to someone who really knows their way around a workshop.

Are you unable to casually dabble in woodworking because you need tools and space, but you don’t want to commit to a woodworking apprenticeship?

We are here to be your woodworking plug. This workshop will get you started with the skills needed to design and build the furniture of your dreams.

You’ll begin this workshop with a few pieces of oak. You’ll then cut and shape the oak into the individual parts of your table, using a mitre saw, a router table, a table saw, and a belt sander.

Never used any of those? Don’t worry! Each workshop has a “guide” who is there to guide you (obvi)!

After tool time, you will make sure everything fits together precisely before assembling your masterpiece.

  • What You’ll Be Making: A small oak table, approximately 15 inches high with a 9 inch square top.
  • Skill Level: Beginner — This course is designed for beginners with little or no prior woodworking experience but includes some advanced aspects of woodworking so it can be enjoyed by people of all skill levels.

  • Length: 4 hours, give or take thirty minutes.

The instructor David Sokoler was fantastic. He was funny and personable. He was also knowledgeable and made himself available to us as a resource for any questions we had about woodworking in general or our personal projects. The class was cute and served as a great introduction to power tools and was accessible even without prior experience.

The instructors, Michelle and Mossimo, were great—friendly, answered questions, and helpful. Fun class although the table was so small. Could it have been a little bigger? Like 12 by 12? And I understand it’s a beginners course and I don’t know much about woodworking, but I was surprised that our table was held together by glue, not nails…. Are there multi week courses so we can learn more advanced information & make other items?

It was a great class in a sense that it was quite easy. The studio had prepared the design of the stool we were building as well as the sequence of construction with every tool having a custom jig that allowed for perfect cuts and tight fits. It ended up just being three students including myself which meant we could ask many questions without holding up the class.

The make a side table class was amazing with two truly fun, patient instructors that'd help you with your table and any problems you came across. You get to sand its edges how you want, though you won't paint it after it's made. It was neat to see what people made and they offered beer after the class. It is a lot of work in those 4 hours: we used 3 different types of (automatic) saws so it gave you a good taste of what a multi-week woodworking class would be like. Great place and can't wait to go back for more classes.

This was an awesome class. It's amazing what I learned to do in four hours. Take 3 pieces of wood and transform them into a table, a very nice, sturdy, not wobbly table. The instructor was very experienced and answered all questions and helped us out whenever need- all with a ton of patience, encouragement , and enthusiasm. I look forward to taking another course at Craftman Avenue. The small class size was great the environment was comfy, had all the tools needed- measuring tools, clamps, etc.. it's a wonderful space, wonderful people. Well worth it in every respect
