Intro to Quiltmaking by Hand

In this four-session class, you will learn all the steps to making a mini quilt entirely by hand, including drawing blocks, cutting fabrics, piecing, basting, and tying or quilting. This is the right class if want to forego the sewing machine and choose the “slow stitching” route with your quilting. You will make a 4-block mini quilt, choosing your own blocks from a selection designed by the teacher.

Complete beginners welcome. No prior sewing experience required.

An iron will be provided for use in the classroom.

Required supplies to bring with you (All supplies available for purchase at the school, except the Sharpie):

1st Class:

• Graph Paper: 4 or 8 squares per inch, at least 9″ x 9″.
• 18″ Clear Drafting Ruler
• Pencil
• Paper Scissors
• Template Plastic: 1 sheet
• Fine point felt pen (Sharpie)

Fabric Marking Tools:

• Chalk pencil for dark fabrics (Recommended: Sewline Mechanical Ceramic Pencil)
• Silver marking pencil or graphite pencil for light fabrics
• Fabric Scissors
• Applique Pins
• Needles: Sharps (Size 9 or 10)
• Thread: 100% cotton 50 weight, to blend with fabrics
• Small scissors for clipping threads
• Fabric for Blocks (see Fabrics below)

Additional Materials

• Batting: Cotton Batting (about 24″ x 24″)
• Long Darning Needles
• Quilting hoop
• Quilting Needles: Betweens (size 9 or 10)
• Quilting thread: 100% Cotton, 40 weight
• Thimble/Thimble Pads

Fabric:

• 100% Cotton mid-light weight

For Quilt Blocks: Choose as many or as few fabrics as you like. You will only need smallish pieces of each, depending on how many different fabrics you use (1/4 yard pieces, fat quarters, or even scraps). Try to find combinations that have contrast so that your patchwork designs will show up (light/dark, solid/pattern, color contrast).

Borders: 1/4 yard or Fat Quarter
Backing: 2/3 yard
Binding: 1/4 yard
