The risograph process is often described as a hybrid between screen printing and a copy machine. It has gained popularity in recent years, due to its suitability for the production of small edition prints, posters, books, and zines; as well as its unique materiality.
This hands-on workshop will introduce students to the fundamentals of the risograph printing process, and then offer guided exploration of reproducing students’ own work using the machine. The course is structured with a balance of group and individual learning: each student will have an individual printing slot with the instructor, in addition to group overviews, examples, and reviews.
Depending upon students’ skill levels other potential topics may include: color separations, halftones, paper, general production practices, and optimizing printing for book production. Students will be provided with standard paper stock, but will also be encouraged to source their own for experimentation.
By the end of the workshop, students will have an understanding of how to use photoshop to format their images for risograph printing as well as how to print independently on the risograph machine.
Prerequisites:
Basic familiarity with Adobe Photoshop is helpful, but may be covered as needed.
