Lenox and 110th is an excellent starting point for a photographer to capture the vibrancy of Harlem, beginning with street portraits of passerby’s, depicted picturesquely in broad images of an avenue complete with store fronts and pedestrians amidst colorful daily life activities.
You will also come upon willing subjects, sitting on a stoop or standing in front of a place of business identified by old world neon signage or a vintage brownstone that transports one back to a former era.
The images in this accompanying slide show richly illustrate the locals of Harlem, as captured by the award-winning photographer, Marla Mossman, well known for her long running project, The Peace Caravan Project which documents the places of historical and religious significance along the ancient Silk Roads and other trade routes of the Far East.
In addition to architectural and street portrait photo ops in Harlem you will have access to great nature and landscape photography just across the avenue which is North Central Park. There are lovely open fields and the occasional sites of sculptures, rock formations and flowing water to broaden your workshop experience, all with the demonstrations and supervision provided by your DPA instructor.
Your teacher is there as you relax and just “Point and Shoot,” or to give more technical instruction on the equipment that will allow you to work at a more advanced level. The group is small and friendly so there is plenty of time for each no matter what their interests in theme or skill level might be. Digital Photo Academy has procured a permit for you to bring a tripod if you like.
We will meet in South East Corner of Malcolm X Blvd (Lenox Ave) and Central Park North.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a talk with one of our experienced instructors, and then you and your fellow students take a stroll through one of a variety of photogenic locales (in any of the 20+ cities the DPA encapsulates). There is street photography, magnificent interiors, farmers markets, zoos, landscapes, and more, photos of which are included within. These photos are a mix of student and instructor images in many different venues and cities across the United States and Canada.
You will have fun in the three hour session, learn to shoot strategically, get more interesting photos of the event, and walk away with a foundation to improve your photographs in the future, whether you’re traveling, or at a birthday party and everywhere in between.
Please note – if a class must be cancelled due to weather or other circumstances beyond our control we will be happy to work with you to reschedule.
