This DIY Darkroom course is divided in 4 segments:
#1: Intro to Historic Processes
#2: Lensless Photography
#3: DIY Film Developer
#4: Lo-Fi Darkroom
Access to running water is necessary for all segments. Some materials may need to be sourced either from your local supermarket or ordered online. Please ensure you give yourself enough time to acquire materials (minimum 1 week) and ask questions in advance. Many of the materials are used or reused through the course or in multiple segments. Segment 3 requires a space that can be made 'light safe' for DIY film developers.
Segment 1: Intro to Historic Processes
October 29th | 10AM-5PM EST
In this segment, participants will explore photographic printmaking using UV light and handmade and hand applied light sensitive coatings. History of the processes and contemporary applications will be discussed. Students will explore contact printing with photograms, film or transparencies and learn the basics of creating anthotypes, cyanotypes and salt prints. Toning with botanicals will also be covered.
Segment 2: Lensless Photography
November 5th | 10AM-5PM EST
In this segment, participants will learn how to expand their creative skillset with black and white silver gelatin paper (new, old, destined for the trash). Techniques covered include lumens and their family of variants, Kitchen chemigrams, and solargraphs. Lumen printing refers to exposures and impressions made without developing photographic paper, creating lovely pastels, earth tones, and sometimes more vibrant creations. “Kitchen” Chemigrams will find participants repurposing household materials, including kitchen waste and materials to make wild and colorful creations allowing photography to crossover into other realms of art such as resist, monoprint, and painting. Solargraphs capture the sun's path across the sky over long exposures. Students will learn best practices for preserving and documenting these types of images.
Segment 3: DIY Film Developer
November 12th | 10AM-5PM EST
In this one-day online course, students will learn about basic photographic science while processing film at home. An introduction to photographic-relevant physics and chemistry will be covered in a very accessible way to achieve the best results. A dark space is required (like a closet or dark bathroom) for a brief part of this course. Techniques covered will include: homebrewing film developer with environmentally friendly household ingredients and film processing.
Segment 4: Lo-Fi Darkroom
November 19th | 10AM-5PM EST
In this segment, students will modify their spaces to make a darkroom suitable for analog printing, film loading, and other processes. The basics of photography, physics, and chemistry will be covered to achieve the best results. Students will make contact prints using traditional black and white paper, with no enlarger necessary, covering a range of artful and practical applications you can easily do at home while using household ingredients that are safe for home use. Techniques covered include basic darkroom setup, setting up an exposure unit with what you have at home and lo-fi paper exposure units for contact printing. The class will begin with a basic introduction to contact printing using photogram and shadowgram, or students can contact print their own negatives. Students will then move on to working with cliche verre and Solarisation/Sabatier.
