In this class, get an introduction to the academic painting practices in oil painting, get the tools you need to use this media and approach this process with confidence. In the first few weeks of our course, we will explore color, shape, tone, value & texture & work on practical exercises & projects to employ these elements into creating dynamic compositions. We will first sketch our subject before moving on to painting, demo dry-bushwork, color mixing and application.
The process of Oil Painting technique encourages you to be aware of every single brushstroke and the application of paint, so control is needed in handling this media to get results. Learn how to handle this medium & how to choose the right color palette to evoke emotion, mood and tone as you approach your subject matter with confidence. Employ light, shadow, volume, depth, & implement special effects. Techniques such as the All Prima method will be explored, along with discussion on master oil painters for inspiration.
During the course you will work from personal subject matter, still life, landscape, portraits, photos and study the style of realism vs. abstraction. You will complete several paintings over the length of this course, depending on how fast you work & how large your canvas & subject, but we encourage each student to work at their own pace. Some drawing experience is helpful for this course but not essential. BYOB if you like!
