Description

What you'll learn in this metal working class:

Learn to cut, rivet, texture and solder sheet metal and wire for various arts applications. Perfect for small sculptures and connecting non-metal objects, such as plastic, wood and aluminum, to incorporate into two- and three-dimensional artworks.

Important Things to Note:
Students Guidelines and Studio Rules:
  • Studios are open 15 min before the start of class. 
  • Do not enter any studio without your instructor present. 
  • Do not enter a studio until the previous class has ended and all the participants have left the room and your instructor is
    present. 
  • Students must leave studios after their class is over. 
  • Do not use any tool that you are unfamiliar with as it could permanently damage the tool particularly hammers. 
  • Only use hammers that you are familiar with like a “hardware hammer” if it doesn’t look familiar don’t use it you will
    ruin it. 
  • Exhaust fans must be turned on when torches are being used or any materials is being melted. 
  • Tools & Torches are coded with six different colors which denote the studios they belong in and their use;
    Blue S353
    Yellow S355
    Red S352
    Orange S350 
  • LIGHT BLUE INSTRUCTOR’S BOX NOT FOR STUDENT USE.
    Green children’s classes 
  • If you borrow a tool from another room return it at the end of class time. 
  • Library books are for reference only please return them in their proper order. 
  • Students are responsible for cleaning the space they have used including the soldering station and bricks and returning
    tools at the end of class. 
This is a communal studio please help us make your time here productive by following the above guidelines.

Q&A

Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one? 
A: No, make-up classes are not allowed since other classes may be full. Further, instructors are paid based on the number of students within their own classes, so attending a class outside your own is not allowed.

Q: Are materials provided and included in cost of the class? 
A: Np. Materials you will need to bring to class:
There are required tools and supplies for this class. Students have two options:

1. Purchase only the essentials and use jewelry kits available during class time ONLY.

The essentials includes the following:
  • Sawblades (2 dozen minimum) #2/0
  • One size #55 drill bit
  • Sandpaper 4 pack (silicone carbide, wet/dry) with one sheet each of grits #220, 320, 400, 600
  • Sheet metal (price varies according to market) Copper 20 gauge 6" x 6" sheet
    Either or both Brass 20 gauge 6"x6"     
    Nickle 20 gauge 6"x6"
  • Wire solder - One foot each of hard, medium, and easy 
  • Fine point Sharpie marker
2. Purchase a personal Jewelry I kit in addition to the essentials from one of the recommended suppliers. 

This option includes the following:
  • Needle files #2 cut, set of six
  • Half-round hand file, #2 cut
  • Handle for hand file
  • Center punch
  • Scribe (cheapest one)
  • Twist drill assortment (set of 6)
  • AA Tweezers
  • Soldering pick
  • 6" steel ruler
Optional but helpful items:
  • Forming pliers (1/2 round and flat)
  • Beeswax (for lubricating saw blades and drill bits)
  • Curved cros
Instructor will provide wire/tube for rivets and introductory wirefabrication - if students want to do more involved wire work, they will need to purchase their own. Instructor will provide acrylic plexi for layering and riveting projects.

Refund Policy

In the event that some or all of the meetings of the program cannot happen in person, programs will be held at the scheduled time in a virtual format via a video conferencing platform. The programs will continue through hands-on, at-home activities, lectures, presentations, and/or group discussions. No refunds will be issued should any portion of a course be held virtually.

We are not responsible for providing makeup classes or issuing refunds for programs missed as a result of illness, emergencies or other events beyond our control.

There are no refunds for outings, classes or workshops that meet fewer than three times per semester.

If you are unable to attend, you may contact [email protected] prior to the first date for a receipt that enables you to claim your contribution as a tax-deductible gift.

Unless otherwise noted in program description, the following schedule applies to programs which meet three times or more per semester:

  • To receive a 95% refund, written request must be received 14 business days prior to the first session.
  • To receive a 75% refund, written request must be received at least 2 business days prior to the first session.
  • To receive a 50% refund, written request must be received at least 2 business days prior to the second session.
  • After that, refunds cannot be granted.

All refund requests must be submitted in writing to [email protected]

Refunds are computed from the date written notice is received. To receive a refund, you must enclose the original of your confirmation letter.

Please allow three to four weeks for processing of your refund request.

Processing fees, membership fees, auditions fees and class or exercise cards are not refundable. No cash refunds.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
