What you'll learn in this wax carving class:

This 2 day workshop will enable jewelry wax model-makers to hone their existing skills, or learn new advanced wax fabrication techniques.

Students will be instructed in a step-by-step method of carving that focuses on precision, symmetry, and clean execution of both subtractive and additive wax-working techniques.

Additional focus will be placed on learning how to problem-solve and make a variety of custom-made wax manipulation tools.

Project: scratch-carved, fine engagement ring with a large center stone in a basket setting, embellished with side stones and a pierced gallery.

Required Materials:

Tools and Materials:

  • Matt green wax ring tube, flat-top, center hole
  • A set of high-quality escapement or needle files
  • Coarse cut (00) 1” wide or wider flat hand file, single or double cut.
  • Valtitan half-round hand file, cut 0 and cut 2 (or half-round ring file in the same cuts)
  • Valtitan flat hand file cut 0 and cut 2
  • Standard metal burs in a variety of shapes, including round, bud, cylinder, tapered cone
  • Standard drill bits: 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mm – 1 of each
  • Large Carbide cylinder bur ½” diameter, ¾” or 1” in length, single cut, 1/8” shank
  • Wax saw-blades
  • 2.5 or 3” dividers - economy or Starrett
  • Digital caliper
  • Small degree gauge for measuring thickness
  • Felt polishing wheel 1/8 to a 1/4" wide, 1" diameter
  • X-Acto knife with several standard blades
  • 1 carat or larger CZ in emerald, cushion, or oval shape for the ring center
  • 2 smaller baguette, or pear shapes for side stones

Refund Policy
Withdrawals from class 7 days prior to the start of the class will receive a full refund for the class minus a 10% processing fee. If cancellation occurs 3-6 days prior to the class, we will provide a 50% refund. Cancellations 48 hours or less receive a 25% refund. Refunds will not be provided for no-shows or same-day cancellations.

We do not refund tuition for classes that students miss due to their own circumstances. Students enrolled in multi-session studio courses (excluding workshops and intensives) may make-up missed class sessions during open studio hours for up to two weeks after the last class meeting.

We reserve the right to cancel or discontinue any class, in which case you may choose to receive a refund, apply the class credit towards a different course, or receive a tuition credit for future use. Tuition credits are valid for up to one year. Refunds will be issued within 30 days.
