Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this glass blowing class:

A weekend workshop that investigates the dynamic between glassblower and mold maker when designing and executing a wooden turn mold. Spend a day with a mold maker for an overview of wooden mold design and fabrication considerations. We will discuss everything from wood selection to hardware and turn a mold from a real world request.

We will focus on the technical subtleties considered by designer, glassblower and mold maker, critical to the development of a successful glass object. This includes creating an accurate drawing accounting for the particulars of the glass object. Will it be a two-part mold? Will it be post gathered? Does it need a bottom? How accurate must it be or is a mould even appropriate?

The second half of the class will be situated in the hot shop exploring the effective use of the mold through demonstration and practice. Students will have access to a variety of wooden blow molds through this final stage.

The ideal student will either have some proficiency in glass blowing or a wood turner interested in the world of mold making.

  • Wooden Molds in the Hot Shop

Reviewed by Alan Dorsey D. on 11/7/2018
An excellent overview of a very specific sub-genre of woodworking. However, I would not recommend it for a general audience as the tools and techniques described are very unusual and the processes difficult to reproduce by the non-expert. For those with a woodturning or glassblowing background it will be fascinating.
