What you'll learn in this glass blowing class:

Portable light projects will be the focus of this one-week furnace glass and neon combination class. In the hotshop, the class will create blown and solid objects that interact with light. In the neon shop, students will learn neon tube forming and the basics of processing - filling the glass tubes with noble gas. Class will discuss the use of neon and/or LED light options available to artists interested in illuminating their work. Students will work with rechargeable battery packs to power their portable illuminated work, enabling artists to “unplug” and consider light work in spaces they may not have previously considered. Battery illumination allows us the unique opportunity as artists to also consider the potential of light and movement. Glass hotshop practice will include glassblowing, solid working, bit preparation, punty connections, and color application. Objects will be finished in the cold shop, opening up opportunities to magnify, refract, and distort light. The class culminates with creating a series of long-exposure photos or “light drawing” images, made by students through an illuminated motion or action that incorporates their portable light object. All levels welcome. Two pumped neon pieces are included with the cost of this course.
