Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this glass sculpture class:

Get inspired by a favorite subject throughout art history - the human figure! This class will focus on sculpting the human figure in borosilicate glass. We will start with learning and discussing theories of human anatomy in conjunction with initial techniques in shaping and cutting glass rod. Each student will start by sketching out ideas, playing with body parts and poses, then translate these ideas into clear and color forms using the torch. Earlier in the week, demonstrations will cover basic safety and processes, then move on to tailor made exercises in order to improve on each student’s technique depending on their skill level and ideas.

What to Expect: I will customize the techniques you will be learning based on your individual skill level. Beginners will focus on shaping and pulling in conjunction with human anatomy. Intermediate students will learn how to layer colored borosilicate stringer over clear glass in order to create larger human figures in borosilicate. I will encourage students to be as creative as they want with the techniques they will learn and to combine the human figure with other forms. Learning figures in borosilicate glass involves a lot of repetition and practice. You can expect to take home multiple figure studies and sketches and also to be able to create a finished piece towards the end of the class.

Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the flame studio, without instruction, on Wednesday - Saturday from 1pm-4pm.

Eligibility: Open to all levels, ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight so the students may have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work from the final day of class.
