Alginate is a material that many of us may have encountered at the dentist - it’s the stuff they use to make molds of your teeth! But did you know you can also use this body-safe material to make castings and recreate fingers, toes, and more in glass? The body has long been a prevalent part of art making, and in this 5-week workshop we will utilize the body as a means for exploring the technique of kiln casting. Using alginate, we will make direct castings off of our bodies, pour waxes to make a textured sculptural positive, make a mold, then cast the glass in the kiln. Come ready to explore this multi-step process!
What to Expect: In this class you can expect to learn how to work with alginate to cast directly from the body. After working with alginate, we will translate these castings into wax and learn the lost wax casting technique to create the object in glass. Students can expect to leave with up to two castings from their body, no larger than 5 inches in any direction. Class will be relatively evenly split between demonstrations and hands on work time.
Eligibility: Experience is welcome but not required or necessary. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: Glass castings will be fired, de-molded, and coldworked within the 5 weeks of class. You should not need to plan additional time to pick up work.
This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
