Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this glass fusing class:

Double Trouble: Clay Meets Glass a Collaboration with BKLYN CLAY

This class will meet at both BKLYN Clay and UrbanGlass. At BKLYN Clay, students will learn how to carve, sculpt, and prepare ceramic molds to be used for glass pieces. Then, moving to UrbanGlass students will learn about cutting and assembling sheet glass to heat and melt together in the kiln through the process of fusing. Explorations will include colors, playing with opacity, translucency, and transparency, and learning about how different kiln temperatures affect glass.

Bringing their clay molds into the kilns at UrbanGlass, students will use heat and gravity to slump the glass fusings over the clay, creating a marriage of form and transfer of texture. Class will also cover porcelain Nerikomi techniques, a traditional method of creating patterns with colored clay, and explore parallels in glass. Conversations will look at the crossover of both materials; patterning, layering, and shaping using molds. Students can expect to leave the class with a few finished projects in both materials, a ton of ideas, as well as an understanding of how to use kiln formed glass and ceramics together! Open to all skill levels.

Dates at UrbanGlass: April 8 (meet at UrbanGlass, first half of class), April 22, April 29, May 20, May 27

Dates at BKYLN Clay: April 8 (group will walk together for second half of class), April 15, May 6, May 13
