What you'll learn in this beginner drawing class:
Introduction to Figure Drawing for Beginners.
This four-hour session is designed to introduce beginners (and people who consider themselves beginners) to figure drawing.
The Session: This session will cover the basic theories artists use to draw the human figure. We work from a live model for the entire session.
Part 1)
Drawing Challenges: Students will learn to treat the human figure as a series of simple shapes to more easily represent it. We will discuss foreshortening and why it is important for students to go on to study anatomy.
Figure Challenges: Students will learn a simple system of bone and muscle groups so they better understand the working of the human form. Handouts and exercises will be given for students to retain as much information as possible.
Part 2)
Gesture Drawing: What is it and why do we practice it? This is an essential part of figure drawing.
Figure Drawing: What is our goal when drawing 5-10 minute poses? There is a great deal we can do in these medium length poses if only we set ourselves goals in the time allotted.
Long Poses: Many of us run out of things to draw in longer poses. We grow bored and stop “thinking” while we work. With a proper focus we will find that these long poses will actually feel very brief to us.
Critique: Drawings of willing students will be shown and discussed. We will talk about successes and what we can do to improve in the future. The goal of a good critique is not to criticize students but to point out future goals where they can improve. This allows them to leave the session eager to continue drawing and improving.

Refund Policy
No refund unless the school cancels the class.
We do honor change-of-date requests for in-person sketch classes with at least 5 business days' notice and for workshops with 8 business days' notice.
In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

Simon is a true professional and a patient, encouraging teacher! I came into this class with an enjoyment for drawing but no formal education or experience and walked out feeling like I had a solid grasp of the foundations of figure drawing. The class is long but you get a couple of breaks and the format follows a very sensible mix of lecture and putting what you just learned into practice. Definitely ok for people w/o experience or who think they can't draw - Simon will show you that you can!

Great teacher! The set up was also super conducive to learning. I actually feel like I learned a lot and it made me want to keep drawing even after the class. The only thing I would change about this class is that I wish we had had more time at the end to draw more poses. Highly recommend this class if you want to learn the basics of figure drawing!

It is not easy and Simon doesn't sell it as so--but breaks it down into an approachable system. I thought he was wonderful and approachable, too. You get the idea that he is enjoying the process of teaching something he has a passion for. Nice.
