Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this collage class:

This workshop takes a lively approach to exploring the interrelationship between collage and painting.

Students will employ the historically unstructured medium of collage as a means of sketching and as a springboard for ideas in painting. Work will begin simply becoming progressively more complex as students are urged to push the limits of the mediums and their ideas. As the work done in one medium assists and influences one's vision in the other the collaboration between process and concept will encourage the production of less planned and more unexpected images.

Required Materials for all class sessions:
Glue
In order to experiment, bring smaller quantities of several different glues. All of the following thin with water
  • Gloss or Matte Acrylic Medium (polymer) Jade Adhesive (neutral ph/polyvinyl glue)
  • Yes Paste (acid-free, smooth flowing adhesive. Won't curl delicate, thin and transparent papers but sometimes doesn’t adhere well to glossy paper.)
Working Surfaces
6 - 12+ sheets of a versatile paper (140 lb. or heavier). Recommended size:  18 x 24" or 22 x 30".  You might consider a selection of small and large sheets.  Choose your paper according to which water based painting medium you plan to bring.
  • Multimedia Aquarelle (Legion Paper) 100%cotton, neutral pH, 140 lb and Cold Press on one side / Hot Press on the other. (22 x 30" =$1.57/sheet)
  • Multi Purpose Rives BFK, Arches Watercolor Paper, Fabriano,  Lenox (22 x 30"=  $2.29/sheet,)
  • Canson (22 x 30"=$2.09/sheet,)
  • Cover Stock
  • Utrecht Brand Watercolor Paper  (18 x 24" =89 cents/sheet)
  • Lana
  • Oak Tag
Assorted Collage Materials
Bring an assortment of red, yellow, blue, black & white transparent papers (tissue or **translucent Glasine) and/or transparent fabrics.

Also bring a variety of other materials including interesting and unusual papers (besides the transparent materials you may also consider bringing some highly textured and patterned papers and fabrics,) cutouts from magazines, color xeroxes from photographs, newspaper material, found objects and other memorabilia.

Other possibilities: threads, strings, cords, embroidery threads, yarn, rope, trim, ribbons, (of varying thicknesses), sewing supplies, glitter, or wire.

Paint

Bring only water based: Acrylic, Watercolor, and/or Gouache.  Your palette should include (but need not be limited to):
  • Alizarine Crimson
  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Permanent or Sap or other Green
  • White
  • Black
Brushes
Bring a variety of large and small rounds and flats. (The YES PASTE requires a stiff bristle brush.) Some additional tools might include sponges, paint rollers, squeeze bottles, rubber stamps, etc.

Stencil Material

Thin Cardboard that can easily be cut with scissors (cereal boxes and other food packaging boxes will work fine) and/or Heavy Weight Pellon  (sold in most sewing and some art supply stores - also called: Interfacing).  Bring 1-2 yards. We will use the Cardboard and / or Pellon to cut stencils.

Glossy Magazine from your recycling bin.

Tools
  • Scissors: good quality scissors, as they will be one of your most important tools!
  • E-xacto knife (optional)
  • Palette  (choose according to the paint you plan to bring)
  • Water Containers  (32 oz. plastic yogurt containers work well)
  • Tracing Paper (a few sheets)
  • Masking TapeRags / Paper Towels

Students who would like to work on very large pieces (significantly larger than 22 x 30" or 30 x 40") can work on unstretched canvas with Acrylic and Collage. In this case, here are a few specifics:
  • Glue:  *Utrecht Gloss Acrylic Medium /Polymer  ($5.85/pint and $30.99/gallon.)
  • Working Surfaces: *Unstretched, Unprimed Canvas (C.D. 50: Medium Texture, 72" wide = $6.69/ 1yd,  $12.99/ 2 yds, $25.99/4 yds, $39.99/ 6 yds. $62.99/10yds).  If you choose to work large, it is recommended that you bring 3 or more yards.
