This class is for both those who have never carved before and those with carving experience who would like to learn about direct carving. Students will carve directly into the wood, allowing its natural properties to influence and guide, rather than imposing preconceived drawings or models onto the wood. The curriculum will include training in the fundamentals of wood carving.
Direct carving is a very creative, freeing way to work. A relationship is formed between the artist and the wood in which the artist allows the wood to “speak”. The artist always considers the wood, and in response applies hands, head, and heart to it. As a result, a sculpture is created that reflects his own unique personality.
Once material is removed, it cannot be added back. For this reason, many sculptors shy away from carving. However, the subtractive nature of carving can be viewed as freeing, training the sculptor to be brave and to be flexible. The class will place special emphasis on encouraging the students to express themselves without fear.
Students may work on any project that they envision, e.g., figurative or abstract.
Basic tools are included in the class fee. But students will need to purchase their own wood. (Usually between $35-$150).
Studio time during store hours is included in the class fee, along with one 3 hour class a week with the instructor. Once class has begun there are No refunds.
