Teaches at The Engaging Educator

Jen Oleniczak is a trained actor and museum educator. After performing in Milwaukee, Chicago and New York, she hung up her theatre shoes and took the dive into education. Realizing her acting training was essential to her teaching practice, she started thinking how she could contribute to the museum education world. Many caffeine infused days sitting at a desk later, cue The Engaging Educator. Since entering the museum education world, she has worked with MoMA, The Frick Collection, Guggenheim Museum, Noguchi Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum and the New York Transit Museum. She helped develop the first College Night at The Frick Collection, program coordinated Arts Intern with Studio in a School, and serves on the NYCMer conference committee. Currently, she calls MoMA, The Frick, Guggenheim and Noguchi home. She can also be seen making people laugh at National Comedy Theatre, and giving public tours at Brooklyn Museum.

She is a warrior. I felt the gap of ageism just a hare, yet I learned a lot. Thank you!

You'll benefit from this course if you've ever wanted to get better at responding to things that happen in the world around you. FORMAT Each class is built around a series of exercises that exercise your ability to think faster on your feet and respond better to situations happening around you. For example, one exercise tested how comfortable we were letting go of control; another made us feel extreme tension while barely moving; another showed us how bad we were at listening. Disclaimer: I'd imagine that as far as these exercises go, YMMV depending on your specific instructor and your classmates. WHAT DO YOU LEARN? I wouldn't think to include any "spoilers" for the exercises you'll be taken through but I -will- list 3 insights I took away from these classes. If any of these ideas sound interesting to you, you'll like this class. 1. Improv is about responding to the world around you. 2. The concept of "Yes, and" means accepting and elevating the situation that's presented to you. 3. Fully committing to what you're doing changes the way your audience sees it. HOW I FOUND THIS CLASS Before attending this workshop series, I attended the single-class Improv for Professionals workshop, also taught by The Engaging Educator staff, but held at The Brooklyn Brainery. What I learned there was intriguing enough for me to commit to this three-day session. ADDITIONAL FEEDBACK I would've liked this course even better if: - We could've been given/emailed a brief list of the exercises we worked on each class -- so we could either review on our own time (unlikely for most of us, I know) or at least jog our memories. I ended up emailing our instructor at the end of the course to send us what we did. - We spent a little more time after each exercise or group of exercises to discuss how these lessons might translate over to work and life. We did spend a little time at the start of each day and after certain exercises discussing this but I found that I learned the most after I took my own time to review what we'd learned. That's also why I'm investing the time to write what's probably an abnormally detailed review. - We had a way to keep in contact with our group. I'm writing to the instructor now to ask about the possibility of joining a Facebook group or such where "alumni" can continue the conversation and discussion. INSTRUCTOR Our instructor/facilitator Jill was extremely attentive, optimistic and great to work with. CLASSMATES My class of ~10 was made up of working folks of both genders, widely ranging ages and from all kinds of professions. No issues here! I'm already thinking about what to do next to improve at improv. Thanks Jill, Jen & CourseHorse!

I thought the class was a great introduction to improv for people of all backgrounds. The class was well organized and fun to participate in. Andrea Kamins did a great job of making everyone in the class feel more comfortable about doing activities that were foreign to them.

Good class. Good practice sessions. But I felt like it did not build-up from the first session to the last - might be an opportunity to create more linkages to applying the skills to real life.
