In Hollywood, a “spec” or sample script of an existing TV show, is both your calling card and required training for any staff writing gig. It’s also a submission requirement for most of the coveted studio TV writing fellowships. Deconstructing a current television show is the best way to learn the craft and structure of TV writing and an essential step to writing great original pilots. To write a spec and understand what to look for in breaking down a TV show properly, you’ll need the insight that only an experienced professional can offer. In this two-day intensive Online TV Structure and Spec Writing Workshop, the class will help you choose the right show for your tone, gifts and voice and teaches you important craft and structure tools that will help you write great shows of your own that will attract agents, execs, fellowship managers and top talent.
In this class, you’ll find the killer high concept episode that showcases your voice and avoids the rookie mistakes. The instructor will teach you how to mimic a show’s writing style, script formatting and presentation that demonstrates that you’re an experienced insider. In this intimate (9 student max) 2 week intensive, through lively craft lectures and in-class workshopping, you’ll digest your show’s structure, living and breathing its characters, arcs and themes.
By the end of this class, you’ll have completed a solid beat sheet of your spec episode so you can write that fellowship-winning draft! 29 padders have been staffed and 16 won fellowships at ABC, Fox, CBS and NBC after taking our TV classes.
Please Note: If you’ve never taken a TV writing class before, we strongly recommend you take TV 101 or TV Comedy 101, and TV Structure for Pilot Writing or TV Character Driven Stories or TV: Dialogue Bootcamp in addition to this class.
