What you'll learn in this medical training:

Wound care is an evidence based course designed for health care professionals working in acute and home care settings. The wound care course includes a 4 hour lecture discussing wound ethology, assessment and treatment and a 4 hour lab, which includes various wound care dressing selection and a demonstration of the use of a Wound VAC. 

At the end of the course the participant will be knowledgeable regarding wound identification, assessment, documentation and dressing selection. Wound care education is designed for registered nurses, as well as, licensed vocational nurses who work independently or in partnership with wound care specialists is home health, hospice, nursing homes and hospitals.

Course Content
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of skin including factors necessary for optimal wound healing
  • Understand the functions of the skin and factors which may impact wound care and healing
  • Identify various etiologies of wounds, including mechanical, venous, arterial and neurologic
  • Describe the parameters that are essential in conducting a comprehensive wound assessment including wound measurements and staging
  • List the three dimensions that should be measured on all wounds in proper order
  • Identify and describe the tissue types that may be visualized in a wound assessment
  • Differentiate between the terms undermining and tunneling
  • Provide five characteristics of an abnormal periwound
  • Identify and describe two types of necrotic tissue assessed in a wound bed
  • Describe wound characteristics that influence wound dressing selection
  • Understand the difference between passive, active and interactive dressings
  • Introduce the T.I.M.E. Principles of Wound Bed Preparation
  • Understand the indications and contraindications of negative pressure therapy including a demonstration of the use of a Wound V.A.C. (Vacuum Assisted Closure)
