The “History of Horror Movies” class is a journey through the highlights of genre filmmaking – from Surrealism and German Expressionism to the new wave of Arthouse Horror coming out of studios such as A24. While students should have a strong stomach and an interest in horror movies, they do not need to have any prerequisite knowledge or expertise in the genre. If students come to class and complete the recommended viewings, they should be able to track the genre from its inception to its modern heyday – and even make predictions about where it might go next.
Materials Fee: N/A
Each student is responsible for their own viewings outside of class. Paying for access to these films via rentals, purchases, or streaming services should be the only additional cost they will incur. Clips will be shown in class whenever possible. All materials should be digital and accessible online
